Various schemes on the coupling of FEM(finite element method) and BEM(boundary element method) has been reviewed and carefully examined.
As a results of the study, a BEM oriented coupling method is selected due to its simplicity in the coupling process and its effectiveness in computation. The method requires minimum efforts in the modification of existing BEM and FEM codes for the coupling. Also a modification to the selected process for the improvement of the robustness of the formulation is suggested.
A two dimensional computer code of the coupling method is developed for the stress analysis in elastostatics. Several problems are carefully selected to demonstrate the effectiveness of the coupling method. The computer code developed sucessfully runs the example problems and yields satisfactory results.
