A crucial factor to be decided in the workplace design stage is whether it is better for the operator to perform his tasks sitting down or standing.
The purpose of this study is to compare task performance in sitting work posture with in standing.
Healthy men participate in the four tasks-simple response time, mental arithmetic, short term memory, and assembly work.
In short term memory and assembly work task, performance was significantly higher in sitting posture, but in the others no significant difference in performance was found.
Therefore, it is recommended to consider work characteristics and above result for designing workplace or changing work postures, and sitting work posture is recommended if posture is independent of work characteristics.
