The parameters of laser diode are measured and they are used in numerical simulation of frequency chirping in the directly modulated laser diode. Spectral broadening in the directly modulated laser diode is also measured and compared with computer simulations. Propagation characteristics of the frequency chirped pulses in a dispersive optical fiber are studied numerically. The chirp power penalties in the simply modeled digital lightwave system are also evaluated by using eye diagrams.
