Prior studies examine organizational or CEO characteristics to find antecedents of CSR. I depart from these studies by focusing on a focal firm’s ‘social’ environment. Specifically, drawing upon an institutional perspective, I suggest that a degree of CSR commitment largely depends on its institutional environment. Using Global Fortune 500 listed firm data over 2006-2011, I find that; 1) firms headquartered in a country following civil law system consistently make more commitment on CSR than those headquartered in a country following common law system; and 2) firms headquartered in a country with strong legal enforcement or higher corruption make less commitment on CSR. Our finding suggests that the future research should understand whether a focal firm’s institutional environment promotes CSR before assessing the firm’s CSR commitment.
이전 연구들은 CSR의 선행요건을 찾기 위해 조직레벨의 변수나 CEO의 특성에 집중했다. 그러나 본 연구는 기업의 사회적 환경에 집중함으로써 이전 연구와 차별화한다. 구체적으로 제도적 관점을 통해 CSR 몰입 정도가 제도적 환경에 크게 영향을 받는다고 제안한다. 본 연구는 2006 - 2011년에 걸쳐 글로벌 포춘 500에 등록된 기업 데이터를 통해 1) 대륙법 계열에 본사를 둔 기업이 시민법 계열에 본사를 둔 기업보다 CSR 활동에 더욱 몰입하고, 2) 해당 국가 법률의 구속력이 셀수록, 더 부폐한 국가일수록 그 국가에 본사를 둔 기업이 CSR 활동에 덜 몰입하는 결과를 도출한다. 이러한 결과는 향후의 CSR 연구가 기업의 CSR 몰입을 이해하기 위해 기업의 제도적 환경을 적극적으로 고려해야 함을 시사한다.
