In the present study, a coupled method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed to predict the aerodynamic loads and the elastic deformations of high-aspect-ratio wings. Within the CFD flow solver, the Navier-Stokes equations were discretized using a vertex-centered finite volume method based on unstructured meshes. A deforming mesh technique was adopted to handle elastic deformation. In the CSD structure solver, the high-aspect-ratio wing structure was modeled by a nonlinear, isotropic, Euler-Bernoulli beam. To obtain the discretized equations governing the wing elastic motion, a finite-element-formulation based on Hamilton`s principle was used. The CSD solver also includes a built-in aerodynamics model based on a two-dimensional strip theory, coupled with uniform/linear inflow models. The unsteady effect was considered using the indicial step response method, and the aerodynamic model was extended to the non-linear regime to consider the non-linearities in the lift, pitching moment and drag behaviors due to airfoil stall. The aforementioned CFD and CSD solvers were coupled by adopting a loose-coupling methodology.
Wing aerodynamic loads were calculated by integrating the surface pressure and the skin friction distributions along the wing chord at a number of wing spanwise locations. Then, the CFD aerodynamic loads are provided to the CSD solver to determine the wing response to the CFD loads. In CSD solver, the wing elas-tic deformations along the wing span were transferred to CFD solver for mesh deformation using shape functions. For the case of static aeroelastic analysis, steady state CFD calculations were conducted to provide converged aerodynamic loads to CSD solver, and the unsteady time accurate CFD calculations were made at every time step for the case of dynamic aeroelastic analysis. In CSD solver, structural equations of motion were advanced in time using generalized-α time integration method.
Initially, to validate the present coupled methods, calculations were made for a hypothetical flexible NACA0012 wing configuration for which abundant predicted results are available for comparison. It was shown that the present CFD-CSD results show good agreement with other predicted data for both static deformations and dynamic behaviors. It was also shown that the CSD code based on the 2-D strip theory is able to provide comparable results with the CFD-CSD calculations, even at post-stall regimes. It was also found that the aeroelastic stability behavior of flexible high-aspect-ratio wing is dominated by geometrical nonlinear coupling effects. Even at flight speeds below the linear flutter speed, limit cycle oscillations are observed if the stable steady state is disturbed by a finite amplitude disturbance when the nonlinear structural beam model was used.
The coupled method was then applied to the high-aspect-ratio wing configuration of an electric aerial vehicle developed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, and the aeroelastic characteristics of a realistic HALE wing was studied by including varying structural properties along the span. Initially, for an angle of attack of 1.65°, the static wing deformations were investigated by the coupled CFD-CSD method. In these static aeroelastic analyses, two operational flight speeds of 7.6 and 10m/s were considered with the standard atmosphere condition at sea level. In the case of 7.6 m/sec, the flap-up bending deflection at the wing tip was predicted to be about 4.4% of the wing semi-span, while the predicted tip torsion is approximately 1.38°in nose-down direction. As the flight speed is increased to 10m/sec, the wing is further deflected in both ways. Very similar results were also obtained when the 2-D strip theory was used. Next, time-accurate coupled CFD-CSD calculations were performed for various flight speeds ranging from 7.6 m/s to 20 m/s, and the dynamic behaviors were analyzed when the wing was perturbed from its static aeroelastic equilibrium state, due to a chordwise one-cycle sinusoidal tip force. It was found that the EAV-2H wing started to be unstable at the flight speed of 17.81 m/s by the coupled CFD-CSD method.
To improve dynamic stability of NACA0012 wing, a design optimization framework based on a genetic algorithm and an artificial neural network is utilized. For aeroelastic analysis of NACA0012 wing, the strip theory was utilized as an aerodynamic module. Center of gravity position and wing taper ratio which affect wing dynamic stability were defined as optimization design variables. The design results were validated using the coupled CFD-CSD method. As a results, the flutter speed was increased by 13.8 % with optimized center of gravity position maintaining aerodynamic performance. In case of the wing taper ratio design, the flutter speed was also increased by 13.8 % with the optimized taper ratio of 0.68 improving aerodynamic performance.
