The expanding availability of large-scale data is leading to increased opportunities for applying advanced data analysis and modeling methodology to a wide range of problems and systems, allowing us to deepen our understandings and make novel discoveries. In this paper we use the tools of network science to the network of musicians from the western classical music tradition constructed from an extensive data archive of CD recordings. We measure the fundamental characteristics of the network such as the small-world property and the power-law degree distribution. We also investigate the community structures of the musicians, revealing how individual attributes such as musical style, positions, and nationalities factor into the large-scale association patterns of the network. Finally, we conduct a more specialized analysis to find closeness or the relevance between musicians - allowing us to understand the egocentric network of the musicians. We believe that our work showcases the potential benefits of network science in the study of arts and humanities.
방대한 양의 데이터 발생과 축적은 데이터 분석과 모델링의 발전 가능성을 더 넓히고 있다. 이는 세상에 대한 심도 깊은 이해를 촉진시키고 있다. 본 학위 논문에서는 문화 영역에서의 연결망 과학의 적용 가능성을 살펴보고, 과학적인 방법론을 통해 문화 이해를 시도하였다. 그 예로 서양 고전 음악 음반 데이터를 기반으로 음악가 (작곡가, 연주자, 지휘자, 앙상블) 들의 연결망을 구성하고 이를 분석하였다. 첫째로, 음악가 연결망의 기본적인 속성을 연구하고, 이 연결망이 기본적인 사회 연결망 특성들을 가진다는 것을 발견하였다. 또한 중요성 분석을 통해 음악가들의 속성이 그들의 협력 가능성에 영향을 준다는 것을 밝혀냈다. 둘째로 음악가들 사이의 군집성 분석을 통해 음악가의 사조, 악기, 국적이 이들의 협력에 영향을 미치는 요소인 것을 알아냈다. 마지막으로 본 논문에서 제기하는 새로운 유사성 측정 방식을 통하여 음악가들 사이의 유사성을 측정하였다. 이는 기존의 유사성 방법이 고려하지 못했던 문화 연결망의 특성을 반영하였다는 장점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 연결망 과학을 나침반 삼아 서양 고전 음악의 전체적인 지도를 작성 및 탐구하려했다. 이를 통해 과학과 문화 영역의 융합이 더 앞서 나갈 수 있다는 가능성을 제시하였으면 한다.
