Korea successfully caught up with Japan in electronics industry during the 1990s and 200s. The display industry is one unique example of the shift in market leadership positions between Japan and Korea. To examine this case, I make a comparative study of Samsung, LG, Sharp, and Sony. I assume that major factors involved in the reversed market position are the entrepreneurial leadership, organizational culture, and technology strategy. In this thesis, I showed some differences of these factors between Korea’s and Japanese firms to explain how Korea’s firms surpass Japanese rivals. After showing the results, I conducted an empirical analysis to figure out how these factors influence firm’s performance in Korea’s electronics industry which contains display industry by using a path analysis. The results showed that entrepreneurial leadership and organizational culture have more positive effect on firm’s financial performance if they were mediated by technology strategy. This result gives some implications for managers of those high-tech industries that how they utilize its own resources to enhance their competitiveness and profitability.
1990년대에서 2000년대로 넘어오면서 한국은 전자산업에서 우위를 점하던 일본을 성공적으로 따라잡았다. 특히 디스플레이 산업은 한국과 일본의 바뀐 위상을 관찰 할 수 있는 특별한 사례이다. 이 졸업 논문은 한국이 디스플레이 산업에서 어떻게 일본을 따라잡고 앞서나갈 수 있었는지에 대한 연구를 수행한다. 이것을 위해서 한국의 삼성 LG와 일본의 Sharp, Sony에 대한 심층적인 사례 분석을 실시한다. 문헌 연구를 통해 기업가적 리더십, 조직 문화, 기업의 기술 전략을 사례 분석을 위한 요인으로 선정하고 한국과 일본 기업들간의 차이점을 분석하여 한국이 어떻게 일본을 따라잡을 수 있었는지를 설명한다. 그리고 실증분석을 통해 이 요인들이 어떻게 기업의 재무적 성과에 영향을 끼치는지에 대한 연구를 수행한다. 실증분석의 결과를 통해 기업들은 기술 전략을 이행함에 있어서 조직 문화와 기업가적 리더십을 유연하게 활용하여 기업의 재무적 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 끼칠 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이 연구를 통해 기술 집약적 산업에 속해있는 관리자들에게 기업의 경쟁력과 수익성 향상을 위하여 자신들의 자원들을 어떻게 활용해야 하는 지에 대해 제언하고자 한다.
