Despite its fast development in science and technology, Korea has yet to produce a Nobel Prize winner. This study aims to offer constructive suggestions to improve the research environment and thus better the prospect of Koreans winning the coveted prize.
This study investigates Nobel laureates in physics, chemistry, and physiology and medicine focusing on: when they made their greatest achievements; in what journals their first papers were published; and whether those winning works were basic or applied researches.
The findings are as follows: First, Nobel laureates discovered their accomplishment at the age of thirty six on average. Second, their first research papers were usually published in U.S. professional journals. A few journals have been carrying most of the Nobel Prize paper. Third, their Nobel-winning works mostly concerned basic sciences. Basic researches made up the majority of winners in Chemistry while applied researches accounted for the majority of winners in the physics prize.
Based on the results, I suggest: First, the government should focus its support funds on scientists who have a high potential of winning the prize. Second, more efforts should be made to improve the quality of research papers while the government should not overrate papers published in renowned journals. Third, the government should increase its financial support for new researches.
