The work presented in this thesis addresses the catalytic performance of hierarchically nanoporous zeolites with focus on the acid sites located on the large external surfaces of the nanoporous zeolites.
Zeolites are crystalline aluminosilicate materials that have uniform micropores (0.3 < diameter < 1.2 nm) exhibiting the molecular-sieving effect. Zeolites also exhibit very strong acidity and structure stability. Due to these advantages as catalysts, zeolites account for 40% of the total heterogeneous catalysts in industrial applications. Typically, synthetic zeolites are obtained in the form of micrometer-sized crystals, so that the external surface area of zeolite crystal is much smaller than the micropore wall. In this case, since most of acid sites are located at the micropore wall, it is generally regarded that the catalytic reaction occurs mostly inside the micropores. In the micrometer-sized crystals, the length of micropore channels is quite long and diffusion of molecules is limited inside the channels. Due to this limitation, there would be an in-efficient usage of the deep part of the zeolite catalyst and the catalyst deactivation attributed to the blockage of pore channel by coke deposition. In order to overcome these problems, there have been many efforts to enhance the molecular diffusion by the addition of mesopores as a highway for molecules and reduction of crystal size to shorten the micropore channel length. Recently, the Ryoo and co-workers developed a surfactant-directed synthesis method for the preparation of hierarchically nanoporous zeolite with sub-nanometer crystal thickness. The method can be applied to the synthesis of various structure types of zeolites with MFI, BEA, MTW, and MRE structures. The nanoporous zeolites are composed of nanometer-sized crystals and have extremely short diffusion path length in the micropore channel. In addition to the short pore channel, the nanoporous zeolites have a considerable amount of acid sites located at the external surfaces. These external acid sites have sufficiently strong acidity to catalyze various catalytic reactions.
Surfactant-directed nanoporous zeolites were investigated as catalysts for the Friedel-Craft alkylation reaction of benzene with propylene. In this work, nanoporous zeolites with BEA, MTW, and MRE structures were employed and the catalytic results were compared to their bulk counterparts. All the nanoporous zeolites exhibited much higher catalytic activity and longer catalytic lifetime than those of bulk zeolites. The catalytic performance could be explained by a linear combination of external surface reaction and internal pore reaction. The external contribution was insignificant in ordinary micrometer-sized crystalline zeolites, but in the nanoporous zeolites, the external contribution was more important. Furthermore, the external catalytic sites had the advantage of slow deactivation. The result revealed that the nanoporous zeolites also have the same type of advantage in the case of benzene ethylation with ethylene.
In contrast to the advantages of external acid sites, methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH) reaction exhibited a somewhat different catalytic result. Previously, it was reported that MFI zeolite nanosheet exhibited superior catalytic longevity for the MTH reaction due to the facile diffusion of coke precursor from micropore to mesopores. In this thesis, MFI zeolites have been re-investigated for the MTH reaction to clarify whether the catalytic function originates from acid sites located solely in the internal micropores or also on the external surfaces. Two catalytic reactions were measured after all acid sites on the external surfaces were poisoned with triphenylphospine oxide. One reaction was the catalytic cracking of 1, 3, 5-triisopropylbenzene, which can occur only on external surfaces. This reaction was completely killed by poisoning. The second reaction was MTH conversion. Unlike the catalytic cracking of triisopropylbenzene, the MTH reaction proceeded at the same rate, even when the external acid sites were poisoned. The result indicated that the MTH reaction occurred inside the internal pores, not at the external surfaces. This information will be useful for understanding MTH catalysis of other hierarchical zeolites.
