Nano fluid in nano channels under 10 nm sizes has several unique properties such as selective ion ex-clusion and nano filtration based on the small size and electrical double layer at the channel surfaces. Espe-cially, if the nano channels are constructed by carbon nanotubes or graphene, there is very fast water transport in the nano channels. The origin of these novel phenomena is based on the atomically smooth and hydrophobic surface of graphene and carbon nanotubes. Also, the graphene has stronger points than carbon nanotubes as the channel walls, which is a 2 dimensional planar sheet and it can be fabricated having designed height, width, and shapes. However, the graphene-based nano channels have not been developed, because there are several difficult problems to achieve the fabrication. Therefore, I suggested several new methods to fabricate graphene-based nano channels and verify the ultra-fast water transport through these channels.
In this paper, I applied anodic bonding technique to graphene-based nano channel fabrications. The conventional fabrication approaches such as Atomic layer deposition, chemical vapor deposition, patterning of graphene, have many serious problems for examples, PR hardening, surface residue, folding and wrinkles on graphene. Therefore, first, the graphene is transferred to $SiO_2$ and glass substrate, which were fabricated such as nano channels and reservoirs by ICP-RIE and Deep RIE. Then, the graphene, which has very flexible property, is liquid like adsorbed substrate following the roughness. After that, upper side glass and lower side $SiO_2$ substrates are bonded by the anodic bonding of large scale graphene without any additional process.
In these processes, we need new graphene transfer method because the conventional wet transfer method has a lot of problems such as PMMA residue, surface delamination of graphene, folding and wrinkles, which can decrease the mechanical/electrical properties of graphene and can be barriers at the nano channel areas. Hence, I suggested the new direct graphene transfer method from Cu foil to various substrates using mechano-electro-thermal forces. Unlike conventional wet transfer method, this MET method doesn’t use the intermediate materials like PMMA, and showed very clean residue-free surface and no-folding and wrinkles.
If the transferred graphene could be used for the channel walls in these fluidic applications, the adhe-sion energy between graphene and substrate should be increased because many water molecules permeated to the gaps between graphene and the substrate after some time of exposure in room temperature and relative humidity conditions by low adhesion energy to the substrate. These phenomena make the graphene p-doping, increase of carrier concentration by the charge transfer from water molecules to the graphene. Therefore, to prevent water permeation, I developed thermal-electrostatic bonding process, which induces more conformal contact of graphene to the surface of substrate and increases the adhesion energy and mechanical/electrical stabilities of graphene. This method was verified by several experiments such as double cantilever beam fracture mechanics test, Atomic Force Microscope, Raman spectra and 8585 test (85deg, 85% relative humidity).
After that, using bonded graphene on $SiO_2$ substrate, as above mentioned, the upper side glass and lower side $SiO_2$ substrates are bonded by anodic bonding method. In this process, the graphene layer is a role of ultra-thin nano adhesive between glass and $SiO_2$ substrates. Since this method is newly suggested method, I suggested a hypothesis that there are C-O covalent bonds at the bonding interface not the nano channel areas between graphene and each substrate of $SiO_2$ and glass, which makes high adhesion energy. I verified this hypothesis using several experiments such as Raman spectra, XPS, and water contact angles. Additionally, I checked that graphene properties of hydrophobic, defect free in the nano channel area remained like before the anodic bonding. Moreover, I analyzed the $SiO_2$ capacitor layer at the anodic bonding process which can prevent the collapse of very thin nano channels.
Using this graphene-based nano channel chip, I analyzed the properties of electro-osmotic flow using patch clamp. I observed the very fast flow rate about 115 times in these channels. The origin of these phe-nomena is based on the properties of graphene such as hydrophobic and atomically smooth surface which makes very large slip length. The slip length of the graphene was computed using Hagen-Poiseuille flow modeling and enhancement flow rate ratio between graphene-based nano channels and $glas_s/SiO_2$ nano channels. The computed slip length is 51.5 nm which is very similar to reported simulation values.
