In this thesis, I propose a gait assistance robot for antigravity that utilizes a single pneumatic actuator for each leg. This is in contrast to existing walking-aid robots which are equipped with multiple actuators - at the hip, knee, and ankle - for each leg. Therefore the proposed single actuator robot would be more cost-effective and lighter than other existing devices. Additionally, a single actuator avoids the difficulties in adjusting the robot link lengths to each user’s body. Due to this, the proposed robot is expected to not generate any unwant-ed resistive forces against the user`s movements that normally occur when the link lengths are not set to the proper lengths for each user`s body.
The compliant walking model proposed by Geyer was taken into consideration in the process of developing an gait assistance robot that supports a user`s weight with the robot legs, instead of generating torques around the user`s joints.
From the proposed strategy, the robot is able to take over some portion of human walking energy with the use of antigravity and, alleviate the joint stresses applied to human joints and bones. The developed robot leg adopted an RPR kinematic chain that does not need to be adjusted to the human body, and is very comfortable to wear.
To reduce the cost and weight of the robot, a wire-displacement sensor was attached to the pneumatic actuator. A force sensor added to the tip of the piston rod was modified to make up for the weakness of the previously developed photo-interrupter based sensors. A ground reaction force (GRF) sensor was also developed with a cheap force sensing resistor to detect gait cycles.
Advanced control strategies are suggested, aimed at assisting humans in squatting and climbing stairs in ad-dition to normal walking. Their performance was evaluated using force sensors that enabled measuring the effect of antigravity, and the signal changes in electromyograms. The experimental study demonstrated the developed robot is effective in assisting antigravity muscles.
