Free and open source software (FOSS) is a classification that started in 1989 when Richard Stallman created the free software foundation. The open nature of the code and the volunteer nature of the community that surrounds FOSS projects have made FOSS a significant economic, social and cultural phenomenon. Additionally, the success of some FOSS projects has attracted the interest of many researchers and practitioners. Even with the great effort to identify factors that influence the success of FOSS projects, they still suffer from a high failure rate. Therefore, this study seeks to synthesis the FOSS literature to identify and test the factors that influence the outcome of a project.
The first essay examines the effect of alignment between development process and software characteristics in free and open source software projects. The study develops the ideal profiles for software development process based on the level of risk attributed to the software characteristics of a project, and utilizes a profile deviation approach to examine the effect of alignment on the FOSS project performance. The results indicate that there is a significant negative relationship of project performance as the profile of a project deviates from the ideal profile. The findings suggest that the development process must be adapted to the project risk of a FOSS project.
The second essay identifies factors crucial to the success of free and open source software projects and empirically tests those factors to a large dataset of FOSS projects. By measuring success in different dimensions the study can identify the dimension of success that each factor affects. Market success had a positive relationship with the type of users, the amount of users collaborating as well as their involvement and the restrictiveness of the license used in the project, where technical success had a positive relationship with the modularity of the project, the amount of contributors to the code and the existence of sponsors for the project. The findings reflect the importance of FOSS project team leaders to understand these factors to better assess the success of a project.
자유 공개 소프트웨어(FOSS)는 1989년 자유소프트웨어 재단을 설립한 리차드 스톨먼(Richard Stallman)이 시작한 소프트웨어 운동이다. FOSS 프로젝트를 둘러싼 공개된 코드의 성질과 자발적인 개발자 공동체의 본성은 FOSS를 경제적, 사회적 문화적인 현상으로 만들었다. 또한 FOSS 프로젝트의 성공은 많은 연구자들과 기업인의 관심을 불러일으켰다. FOSS프로젝트의 성공에 영향을 준 요인을 규정하려는 많은 연구 노력에도 불구하고, FOSS 프로젝트는 여전히 높은 실패율을 보이고 있다. 본 학위논문의 목적은 FOSS 프로젝트의 결과에 영향을 준 요인을 찾고 검증하는 데에 있다.
본 논문은 크게 네 개의 장(chapter)으로 구성되어 있고, 두 개의 에세이를 포함하고 있다. 첫 번째 에세이는 “자유 공개 소프트웨어의 개발 프로세스와 소프트웨어의 특징 사이의 적합 효과”이고, 두 번째 에세이는 “자유 공개 소프트웨어의 영향을 미치는 요인”이다.
첫 번째 에세이는 자유 공개 소프트웨어의 개발 프로세스와 소프트웨어의 특징 사이의 적합도에 대해 조사한다. 본 연구는 소프트웨어의 특성에 기인한 위험 수준에 기초하여, 소프트웨어 개발 프로세스에 대한 최적의 프로파일을 개발한다. 또한 FOSS 프로젝트의 성과에 편차 접근법을 이용한다. 결과는 프로젝트의 프로파일이 이상적인 프로파일에서 벗어남에 따라 프로젝트의 성과에 상당한 부정적인 관계가 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 결과는 개발 프로세스가 FOSS프로젝트의 프로젝트 위험에 적응해야 함을 제안한다.
두 번째 에세이는 자유 공개 소프트웨어 프로젝트의 성공 요인을 확인하고 이러한 요인들을 실증적으로 분석한다. 본 연구는 FOSS 프로젝트의 성공을 시장적 차원과 기술적 차원으로 나누어 접근한다. 시장에서의 성공은 여러 종류의 사용자들과 개발자들의 협업이 시장에서의 성공에 긍정적 영향을 주었다. 뿐만 아니라 사용자들의 참여와 프로젝트에 사용되는 라이센스의 제한성도 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 기술적 성공은 프로젝트의 모듈과 프로젝트의 개발자들의 코드, 그리고 스폰서의 존재가 긍정적인 관계를 가진다.
FOSS 프로젝트의 팀 리더가 이러한 요인을 이해하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 따라서 본 논문의 결과는 FOSS 프로젝트의 성공에 실제적으로 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
이 연구는 다음과 같은 한계가 있다. 첫째, 소프트웨어의 특성에 따른 지표의 복잡성을 줄이기 위해 Java를 사용해 개발한 프로젝트만을 대상으로 하였다. 추후 연구에서는 다른 프로그래밍 언어를 사용해 개발한 프로젝트들 사이에서도 어떠한 차이점이 있는지 비교하고 이 연구가 보여주는 방식과 동일한 결과를 가져오는지 검증해볼 필요가 있다. 둘째, 본 연구는 FOSS프로젝트 기간 중 일정 시점을 기준으로 행해졌다. 한 프로젝트의 다른 시기를 측정하고 프로젝트가 성장함에 따라 개발 프로세스 전체를 탐구하는 것은 더욱 흥미로울 것이다. 마지막으로 본 연구는 프로젝트 성과를 위해 두 개의 차원을 도입하였다. FOSS 프로젝트 성공을 측정하는 다른 방법 개발한다면 FOSS 프로젝트의 이론적 연구에 기여할 수 있다.
