The number of machine-to-machine (M2M) devices has rapidly increased due to a growing demand for a wide range of M2M applications such as e-health, vehicular communications, and smart grid. Future cellular networks should accommodate a large number of M2M devices and their random access requests at a specific time instant. In this thesis, we propose a novel random access scheme to effectively increase the number of available, preambles in a future M2M communication environment. The proposed scheme provides additional preambles by spatially partitioning a cell coverage into multiple group regions and reducing cyclic shift size. As a result, the proposed random access scheme can accommodate a significantly large number of machine nodes with significantly lower collision probability and shorter random access delay, compared with the conventional random access scheme. Especially, in a 2 km cell, the conventional random access scheme yields a collision probability of about 38% with 30,000 machine nodes, while the proposed spatial group based random access scheme yields a collision probability of about 3% with 30,000
machine nodes.
