Outcoupling efficiency in organic light emitting diodes(OLEDs) is limited by refractive index difference between layers. Several optical loss channels in OLED structure exist. The waveguide mode is the trapped light, which is induced by high refractive index of organic/transparent electrode and low refractive index of substrate. Also, substrate-confined mode results from refractive index difference between substrate and air interface. We utilized the low-cost polyethylene naphtalate(PEN) as a high refractive index substrate to minimize waveguide mode. The PEN substrate, which makes much light delivered into substrate, could also reduce substrate-confined mode by inherent haze properties. The green fluorescent OLED fabricated on industrial-grade PEN shows enhanced light output by factor of 1.2 compared to other substrates. We also shows increased outcoupling enhancement as factor of 1.8 in case of red phosphorescent OLED. Further, the influence of high refractive index and haze properties of PEN on outcoupling enhancement was examined. These two factors were analyzed by different optical simulation-power density calculation for high refractive index effect, and ray optics simulation for haze modeling . The first optical simulation shows the high refractive index could dramatically suppress waveguide mode and increase substrate-confined mode. The second simulation shows enhanced power fraction into air due to haze effect of substrate, which is made based on bulk haze concept.
