There has been a flourishing interest in developing emotional communication over a distance by transmitting enriched expressions. The aim of this study is to investigate how shape-changing expressions can support emotional communication in a mobile context. This thesis presents Wrigglo, a shape-changing smart phone peripheral. Wrigglo allows pairs of users to share wriggling movements with one another. Attached to a smart phone, Wrigglo captures the sender’s joystick motion and activates the receiver’s Wrigglo which repeats the motion simultaneously. Two in-lab exploratory studies were conducted to explore the value of shape-changing peripherals for emotional mobile communication. Twelve pairs of female participants were debriefed on the experience of using Wrigglo in the two contexts, of direct and indirect communication. The main questions in the studies were about the role, the perception, and the created vocabularies of shape-changing devices in mobile communication. In the context of texting and video chatting, Wrigglo supported emotional and functional roles of body gestures and postures. Also, to some extent, Wrigglo reflected the connected user’s presence through its anthropomorphic movement. For the context of indirect communication, participants anticipated that the independent use of Wrigglo could be used as an informative notification conveying mood or emotion. The contribution of this thesis is threefold. First, it suggests the considerations for designing a shape-changing peripheral for mobile communication through developing 5 prototypes. Secondly, it verifies the potential of a shape-changing peripheral for emotional communication through two user studies. Finally, it proposes a novel telepresence modality that extends telepresence through synchronized distributed physical objects.
풍부한 표현 전달을 통한 원거리에서 감성 커뮤니케이션에 관해 관심이 증가하고 있다. 본 논문은 모바일 환경에서 형태 변형 표현이 감성 커뮤니케이션에 어떤 영향을 미치는가를 알아보고자 한다. 본 논문은 Wrigglo(이하 위글로) 라는 형태 변형 모바일 주변기기 사례로 개발한 것을 보여준다. 위글로는 원거리에 있는 사용자가 서로 꼼지락 거리는 움직임을 주고 받을 수 있도록 한다. 휴대폰에 장착한 후, 발신자가 조작한 조이스틱 방향대로 수신자의 위글로가 동시에 움직이도록 한다. 실험실 환경에서 두 번의 탐색적 경험 평가를 통해 위글로가 감성적 모바일 커뮤니케이션에서 어떤 가치를 갖는지 알아보았다. 12쌍의 여성 참가자들은 두 가지 상황에서 위글로를 사용해 본 후 소감을 이야기해주었다. 주요 질문은 위글로의 역할, 인상, 움직임 어휘에 관한 것이었다. 문자대화와 화상 전화 상황에서는 위글로는 제스처나 포스처로서 역할을 함으로써 기능적 감성적 역할을 수행했다. 또한, 일부 의견에서는 위글로의 의인화된 표현으로 인해 상대방의 존재감이 반영된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 반면, 알림 도구로 사용된 상황에서는, 참가자들은 위글로의 독립적인 사용은 기존 방식의 알림보다 감정이나 분위기 정보를 갖고 있을 것으로 예상하였다. 본 논문의 기여점은 첫째, 5단계의 반복적인 프로토타입과정을 통해 모바일 커뮤니케이션을 위한 형태 변형 주변기기 디자인 고려사항을 제안하고 있다. 둘 째, 두 번의 사용 경험 평가를 통해 커뮤니케이션 상황에서 어떤 가치를 갖는지 밝혔다. 마지막으로, 동기화된 물리적 대상을 통해, 새로운 종류의 원격 존재감을 제안하고 있다는 점이다.
