The influence of foreign investors has increased rapidly since 1997 and their behavior is thought to be the possibility to make momentum in Korean stock market. This study rechecks that momentum is observed with large firms when the market is up and investigates the predictive power of past performance of each stock. Especially, I check the claim by Novy-Marx (2012) that momentum is primarily driven by intermediate horizon past performance, not recent past performance. Traditional concept of momentum as short-run autocorrelation in price could not explain this phenomenon. The momentum strategy formed on past returns from 12 to 7 months generates significantly higher returns and abnormal returns relative to the Fama and French three factor model than strategy based on past returns from 6 to 2 month. Therefore, intermediate-term past returns are the main driving force of momentum and this phenomenon can be explained by 12 month effect
