Combined with three elements of traditional performance (stage, actor and audience), new media have overcome the limits of traditional performance arts, and broken new ground in digital performance.
One of the new media that receive the most attention is visual media, which has been carving out new spaces across the entire field of arts in terms of its applications as an artistic medium. Specifically, utilization of screen using projector has been consistently prevalent since the early 20th century, and diversified to in-clude projection of not only 2-dimensional, but also 3-dimensional videos, along with the propagation of VJing software and the development of 3D modeling programs. The 3D projection mapping has allowed for more realistic representation of 3-dimensional space and time, as well as extension of senses. With the help of such technology, it is now possible to actively utilize both physical and virtual stage spaces as means of ex-pression.
Most of the previous works use floating hologram and several projectors to create visual media; transparent screen is installed at front side of the stage above reflecting plate. However, the method requires a space for the reflecting plate, which tends to increase in size in proportion to the screen. Another projection method of vertical transparent screen installation is greatly restricted by stage conditions, such as intensity of surrounding illumination. Other examples include using rear projection screen, which is not readily applicable to small-scale theater. This calls for a new way to direct virtual stage space for performance arts.
This study examines the changes induced by visual media in the field of performance arts, as well as the characteristics of visual media used in performance based on previous studies. In specific, studies regarding virtual stage direction using projector are analyzed. Finally, this study suggests a partitioned layer projection method utilizing single projector installed at upper side of the stage or the audience seat, which enables video projection on three sides. The purpose of this study is to propose a system that overcomes environmental and financial restriction of traditional stage direction and facilitates stage performance in the absence of the back side of the stage.
전통적 공연을 구성하던 무대, 배우, 관객의 요소가 소리나 영상, 센서 등의 뉴미디어와 결합하여 공연 예술이 가지고 있었던 기존의 한계를 극복하고 새로운 영역인 디지털 퍼포먼스로 발전해 나가는 추세이다. 현 시대의 매체 중 가장 주목 받고 있는 것은 영상 매체이며, 영상은 지속적으로 예술 전 분야에 걸쳐 그 활용 범위와 예술적 매체로서의 스펙트럼을 넓히는 중이다. 그 중에서 프로젝션을 사용한 스크린의 활용은 20세기 초부터 사용되어 온 방법으로 현재에도 많이 사용되는 영상기법 중 하나이다. 프로젝션을 이용한 무대 위 표현방식은 점점 다양화 되어 단순한 스크린 위에 2D 영상의 투사에서부터, VJing 소프트웨어의 보급 및 3D 모델링 프로그램 발전과 더불어 3D 프로젝션 매핑에 이르게 되었다. 이전의 방식들이 2차원 평면에서 이루어지던 무대기술이라면, 3D 프로젝션 매핑을 이용한 방식은 3차원 입체공간까지의 표현을 가능하게 하였다. 또한 이를 넘어서는 시공간의 표현이 가능하도록 발전하였으며, 이러한 기술의 발전은 공간과 감각의 확장을 가져왔다. 이와 같은 기술의 발전은 현실의 공간이라는 단위와 더불어 가상의 공간까지도 표현의 수단으로 활용할 수 있기에 이르렀다. 표현에 제한적이었던 과거와는 달리 좀 더 적극적으로 물리적 무대공간과 가상의 공간까지도 하나로 묶을 수 있게 된 것이다.
이러한 상황 속에서 본 연구는 우선 공연 예술에서 영상미디어가 가져온 변화를 알아보고, 공연에 사용되는 영상 미디어의 종류 및 특성을 기존 연구들을 통해 분류해보고 사례를 제시하였다. 그 중 프로젝터를 이용한 가상의 무대 연출에 관련된 선행 연구들을 분석해보고, 극장에서 조명기의 설치 목적 이외에는 비교적 사용되는 경우가 적었던 무대 윗 공간 또는 객석의 윗 공간에 한대의 프로젝터만을 설치하고 각각의 레이어에 분할 투사를 통해 무대 뒷 벽과 무대 중간에 설치된 투명스크린 그리고 스크린 앞쪽의 바닥까지 3면에 프로젝션을 할 수 있는 새로운 방식을 제시하고자 한다. 이 방식을 통해 기존의 방식들이 가진 환경적, 경제적 제약을 극복하고 후무대가 없는 소규모 공연장에서 손쉽게 가상의 공연 무대 환경을 구축할 수 있는 새로운 시스템을 제안 하는 것이 본 연구의 목적이다.
