This thesis deals with the use of Twitter for musical sonification. Based on reviews of previous works in sociology, psychology, musicology, and computer music, musical potential of Twitter as a real-time social network service (SNS) and large-scale database is presented with the idea of structural analogy with music. Several sonification mapping strategies to reflect relationships in the data space in the auditory domain are then suggested and analyzed through detailed evaluations.
As a result, Twitmusic - sonification software which utilizes both Twitter"s accumulated data as well as its real-time messages - is presented as a tool for general users to design their own mappings and generate music from auditory display of tweets. Result of user tests shows that sonified results with tweet-improvised phrases generated by Twitmusic using proposed mappings are not only appreciable as a musical piece but also potentially powerful for representing the characteristics of specific features of Twitter.
이 논문은 음악적 소리화를 위한 트위터의 사용을 다룬다. 사회학, 심리학, 음악학 및 컴퓨터 음악의 기존 연구에 기반하여, 실시간의 소셜 네트워크 서비스(SNS)이자 대규모의 데이터베이스로서 트위터가 가지는 음악적 잠재력을, 트위터와 음악 사이의 구조적 유사성을 통해 제안한다. 데이터 공간과 소리 영역의 관계를 반영하는 여러 가지 맵핑 전략을 제시하고, 실험을 통해 그 전략을 분석하였다.
결과적으로, 트위터의 누적된 데이터 및 실시간 메시지들을 이용, 일반 사용자들이 각자의 맵핑 전략을 수립할 수 있고, 그 결과 만들어진 청각 디스플레이로부터 음악을 만들어 낼 수 있는 소프트웨어인 Twitmusic을 제안한다. 사용자 실험을 거친 결과, 앞서 제안된 맵핑 전략을 이용하여 Twitmusic이 만들어내는 즉흥적인 소리화 결과물이 음악적으로도 주목할 만한 결과를 가져올 뿐 아니라, 트위터의 특징들을 표현하는 데에 잠재적 가능성이 있음을 확인하였다.
