ABSTRACT
This study aims to explore the correlations among the patterns of watching science-related TV programs, the motives of viewers of such programs, the amount of time spent watching terrestrial TV science programs, and viewership of science-
specialized cable channels.
Based on the use and gratification theory, the study presents the results of a survey of science program viewers.
In terms of the amount of time spent watching science programs, there are little differences between male and female audiences, according to the survey. By age, however, those in their 40s and over show higher level of interest in science programs than younger groups.
In terms of genres, viewers with relatively higher interest in science programs tend to prefer educational programs to entertainment programs, the result showed.
The survey divided TV viewers in terms of major motivation - social interaction, information, and relaxation/leisure - and investigated their attitude toward science programs. It found that the more are viewers motivated by social interaction and information, the more they watch science programs, while the correlation between relaxation/leisure motivation and viewing of science programs was not indicated.
The groups who spend much time on watching science programs on terrestrial TVs belong to relatively older age groups. They prefer information-oriented media forms like newspapers. Their media use is motivated primarily by the need of information. So science channels need to focus on programs for such age groups such as those designed to help them understand basic scientific principles and offer practical scientific knowledge that can be used in their daily lives. But the fact that entertainment factors do not have much influence on viewers reflects science programs’current concentration on information contents. But on the other hand, it also indicates that science programs fail to attract younger viewers because they lack elements of entertainment. The fact that science program viewers are driven by the motive of social interaction underscores the need for science programs to embrace two-way communications with viewers rather than a one-way delivery of information.
The survey also looked into the linkages between viewing motivations and the amount of time spent watching science programs on terrestrial TVs. It showed those motivated by social interaction spend more time watching science programs and that the amount of science program viewing among those with the other two aforementioned motives depend on the format and contents of programs.
Also, the more the viewers watch science programs on terrestrial TVs, the more they would watch science-specialized programs on cable TVs. This suggests that fans of science programs tend to enjoy them via diverse channels.
These results were also predicted by the survey of viewership and satisfaction levels regarding YTN Science TV, Korea`s only science-specialized channel. By implication, there is a considerable potential demand for science programs in Korea. So producers need to benchmark the world’s leading science programs from National Geographic, Discovery, BBC and NHK to develop programs fit for Korean conditions. They also need to increase programs tailored to 40-somethings and older age groups who are loyal to science programs. The results also suggested that science programs should break the stereotypes of information and educational contents to transform themselves into “infotainment” programs that incorporate elements of entertainment and variety shows, and continuously develop program formats that could appeal to a wider range of class and age groups.
Accordingly, such advanced forms of science programs could boost viewers’ satisfaction and thus contribute to the diffusion of the culture of science in Korea.

Analysis on Viewing Patterns of Science Related TV Program Viewers
