Displaying national pride in Korean national science museums has been highly political because technologies were underdeveloped and indigenous science has little relevance to modern science. Therefore, the science museums has politically and deliberately determined what to show and what to hide for evoking national pride from Korean science and technology. I examine the politics of displaying national pride in three national science museums in Korea, the Seoul National Science Museum in the 1970s, the National Science Museum in the 1990s, and the Gwacheon National Science Museum in the 2000s. I investigate what problems they encountered when they represented national pride and what strategy they applied to encourage national pride. The Seoul National Science Museum represented national pride by showing economic and industrial competitiveness of Korea with the display on energy industries and replicas of factories. Industries and industrial technologies, which almost matched foreign counterparts, were proudly displayed, but for industries and technologies Korea fell behind the museum exhibits avoided juxtaposing them with advanced counterparts in foreign countries in order to hide technological and economic inferiority. The National Science Museum in the 1990s represented national pride by demonstrating the ingenuity of Korean indigenous science with displays on traditional science and scientific heritage. The value of the world’s first scientific heritage was explained in detail with the development of modern science and technology, whereas exhibits of scientific heritages without such rationale tried to find hidden scientific principles and display them to demonstrate the scientific ingenuity of the Korean nation. As Korean capability of science and technology significantly increased in the 2000s, the Gwacheon National Science Museum extended its representation on national pride to what were hidden before. Ordinary household implements, previously considered shameful or insignificant, are now disclosed becoming new source for displaying national pride through scientific ingenuity of Korea. Korea’s cutting-edge technological achievements are proudly displayed without hesitation as evidence that Korea leads and contributes to the development of modern science and technology. This strategy of representing and hiding is the politics of display represented in national science museums in Korea.
한국 국립과학관의 전시는 매우 정치적이다. 이는 한국의 기술 수준이 덜 발전된 나라였으며, 한국의 전통과학과 현대과학 사이에 존재하는 간극 때문이었는데, 이런 이유 때문에 한국의 과학관은 한국의 과학기술에 대한 자부심을 고취하기 위해 무엇을 숨기고 무엇을 보여줄지 정치적으로 심사숙고 해서 전시해야만 했다. 본 논문은 한국의 세 과학관-1970년대의 국립서울과학관, 1990년대의 국립중앙과학관, 그리고 2000년대의 국립과천과학관-에 대해 과학관 전시의 정치성을 분석한다. 민족과 국가에 대한 자부심을 고취하는 전시를 실시할 때 세 과학관이 겪는 문제를 조사하고, 문제를 해결하기 위해 어떤 전략을 도입하는지 알아본다. 국립서울과학관은 발전 설비와 관련 산업, 그리고 실제 공장 모형 전시를 통해 한국의 산업적, 경제적 경쟁력을 보여주어 자부심을 고취하였다. 고도로 발전된 다른 나라의 산업이나 기술과 비교할 수 있는 수준의 산업이나 기술에 대해서는 자랑스럽게 전시하였지만, 동시에 그렇지 못한 산업이나 기술에 대해서는 다른 나라의 산업이나 기술과 병치하는 것을 피해 한국 산업기술의 열등한 상태가 드러나 보이지 않도록 하였다. 국립중앙과학관은 전통과학문화재 전시를 통해 한민족의 과학성을 보여주어 자부심을 고취하였다. 한국의 전통과학은 현대과학의 발전에 기여한 바가 매우 적기 때문에, 국립중앙과학관은 양면적인 방식으로 전통과학문화재를 전시하였다. 세계 최초의 과학문화재 같이 그 중요성이 매우 명확한 전시물의 경우 현대 과학의 발전에 어떻게 기여했는지 명확하게 밝혔다. 반면 이런 근거가 없는 과학문화재에 대해서는 각 문화재에 담겨 있는 과학적 원리를 찾아내서 아주 상세하게 설명하여 한민족의 과학성을 보여주고자 하였다. 한국의 과학기술역량이 상당히 상승하면서, 국립과천과학관은 이전의 국립과학관에서 숨겼던 전시물에 대해서도 한민족에 대한 자부심을 표출한다. 전통과학문화재에 대한 풍부한 과학적인 해석과 첨단기술 전시를 통해 한국의 과학 경쟁력을 보여주어 자부심을 고취한다. 전통과학문화재에 관해서는, 현대 과학 문화재와 비교했을 때 매우 보잘것없고 중요하지 않다고 생각해서 그 동안 명시적으로 전시되지 않았던 일상생활 물품에서도 과학 원리를 찾아내어 한민족의 과학성을 매우 분명하게 보여준다. 첨단기술에 관해서는, 한국의 첨단과학기술성과를 매우 자랑스럽게 전시하는데 전혀 거리낌이 없고, 이런 성과를 통해 한국이 현대 과학기술의 발전을 이끌고 기여하고 있다는 점을 보여준다. 이것이 한국의 국립과학관에서 표현되는 과학관 전시의 정치성이다.
