XBRL is a kind of programming language whose aim is to enhance the accuracy, reliability and decision-relevance of the financial and business information. This dissertation discusses the effects of XBRL adoption on the capital markets. For this purpose, the information asymmetry in Korean stock market and the earnings management of the U.S. companies are investigated. The result reveals that XBRL has an effect of reducing the information asymmetry and the earnings management. But the reduction of information asymmetry of stock price of small-sized companies is not strong compared to large-sized companies and the earnings management behavior of the companies with less independent board of directors is not reduced by the adoption of XBRL. This dissertation provides some explanations for these results; the taxonomy of XBRL is not technologically sophisticated enough and the software and service providers supporting the decision-making process using data in the XBRL format are not readily available in the market.
본 연구는 XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language)의 도입이 자본시장에 미치는 영향에 관하여 조사하였다. 구체적으로는 XBRL의 도입으로 인하여 한국 주식 시장에서 기업 주가의 정보 비대칭성이 어느정도로 완화되었는지와 미국 기업들의 이익조정 행위가 어느 정도로 감소하였는지를 조사하였다. 조사 결과 XBRL의 도입으로 인하여 한국 주식 시장의 정보비대칭성과 미국 기업의 이익조정 행위 모두 통계적으로 유의미하게 감소한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 현재 XBRL의 도입을 통하여 기대했던 효과들이 현실화되고 있다는 결론을 내릴 수 있다. 하지만 한국 주식 시장에서 규모가 작은 기업의 경우에는 정보 비대칭성의 감소 효과가 통계적으로 유의미하지 않았고 미국 기업의 경우에는 XBRL의 도입 후에 이사회의 독립성이 낮은 기업들의 이익조정 행위를 통계적으로 유의미하게 감소하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 이들 조사 결과에 대한 원인으로 첫째 XBRL의 기술적 고도화가 충분히 이루어지지 않아서 XBRL을 활용한 응용 서비스를 제작하는 데 어려움이 존재하고 둘째 현재 XBRL을 둘러싼 기업 생태계가 완전하게 형성되지 않아서 XBRL을 이용한 의사결정 능력을 도와줄 소프트웨어 회사와 서비스 제공자들이 부족한 점을 제시하였다.
