The world has been flattened, but languages. We often need translation service or a lot of efforts to acquire second-language for various purposes even if our professions are not related with language. So machine translation is widely used due to its quick usage and fair quality. However, it makes a lot of mistakes, and it’s not easy for many people to verify the result by just looking at it. There are also many things to be improved in conventional language-learning approaches that often lack relevance with learners’ needs. To address these issues, we present a language translation and learning service, CoLingual. The service is designed with a strategy consisting of four interaction and interface design tactics that streamline and maximize the use of crowd-sourcing and the characteristics of mobile computing platform. A study was conducted with 18 participants to evaluate the user experience and explore the potential benefits of CoLingual. We also investigated the effects of the service design strategy that we suggested.
세계는 평평해졌음에도 불구하고(Thomas L. Friedman의 저서 세계는 평평하다 인용) 언어는 여전히 그렇지 않다. 우리는 종종 우리의 전문 영역이 언어와 아무 관련이 없다고 하더라도 다양한 목적으로, 번역 서비스를 필요로 하거나 제2언어를 습득하기 위해 많은 노력을 기울이곤 한다. 그러한 이유에서 기계 번역은 그 빠른 사용법과 그럭저럭 괜찮은 품질로 인하여 널리 많은 사람들에 의해 사용되고 있다. 하지만 기계 번역은 많은 오역을 만들 뿐만 아니라 많은 사람들에게는 단순히 번역 결과만 보는 것만으로는 그 번역 품질을 평가하는 것이 결코 쉽지 않다. 또한 전통적인 언어학습의 접근법은 학습자들이 필요로 하는 내용과 관련이 없고 동떨어지는 내용을 제공하는 등 개선될 부분이 많이 존재한다. 이러한 점을 해결하기 위해서, 우리는 언어 번역 및 학습 서비스 CoLingual을 선보였다. 이 서비스는 크라우드소싱과 모바일 컴퓨팅 환경의 특징을 자연스럽게 활용하고 그 활용성을 극대화하는 네 가지 인터랙션 및 인터페이스 디자인 전략에 의해 디자인 되었다. CoLingual의 사용자 경험과 잠재적 유익등을 평가하기 위해 총 18명의 참가자들을 통해 실험이 진행되었다. 또한 적용된 디자인 전략의 효과에 대해서도 분석하였다.
