Product-Service Systems (PSS) can fulfil customers’ needs and enable better market segmentation for companies in highly-competitive markets (Tukker, 2006). Although PSS can expand the market and suggest new solutions, the study of the design of PSS has seldom been addressed even though design plays an important role in the development process of new product-service systems (Morelli, 2002).
This research defines Product-Service Systems and the role of design in PSS. Previous researchers focused on the typology of PSS. This typology was based on the possession of the product or the relation between stakeholders, both of which predicted PSS composition because it is complicated and various. However, those typologies did not include an important stakeholder-the users. The lack of attention paid to design of PSS and the users is the rationale behind this research, which is an attempt to construct a classification system of Product- Service Systems in order to investigate their design attributes.
There is a view that design is includes product’s attributes, which are features of the product and reflect users’ needs. Analyzing PSS’s design attributes can help companies satisfy customers’ needs-and therefore can play a significant role in the effectiveness of PSS. Users’ involvement in the life cycle of PSS-(production, use and extinction) was analyzed because it has distinct design attributes compared to product design and service design. In this research, PSS classified according to users’ involvement and product-service orientation. Additionally, the importance of design attributes in each type of PSS for practical application was analyzed.
Research methodology included a critical study of literature to establish the context and rationale for the research. Based on the literature review, a survey and workshops with experts were conducted for thirty PSS cases. Design attributes of Product-Service Systems, were extracted from literature reviews and experts’ workshops. Through survey, PSS classified according to the users’ involvement and most related design attributes are identified.
The findings suggest that the design attributes of PSS reflect users’ needs. Systemicity and intuitiveness are related to users’ involvement and aesthetics is less important design attribute of PSS. The research also suggests that companies’ capabilities and processes can be enhanced by shifting from simply selling products to selling integrated products and services that deliver enhanced value. This systematic analysis and classification of Product-Service Systems, indicates the importance of considering design in the manufacturing industry.
