As future products become more complex and intelligent, a new approach for designing more emotional and meaningful product is timely needed. To achieve this goal, a key idea is suggested applying pet-like characteristics to interactive product design as a promising design model for enhancing emotional user experience. As a result of related research and user’s interview, we figured out pet’s characteristics focusing on human-dog interaction. Based on it, three key features of pet’s characteristics for designing pet-like products were developed. Those are a feature of awareness and being adapted to user, a feature of being proactive to user, and a feature of highly expressive to user. As a design case, CAMY, a pet-like PC camera with mixed reality was proposed. CAMY is an interactive PC camera that not only emotionally interacts with a user but also functionally supports the user`s tasks by detecting user’s condition through camera vision information. An evaluation study was conducted to find out the values and implications of experiencing CAMY. As a consequence, pet-like product had effected on user’s emotional experience and attitudes. Users recognized CAMY as smarter and more trustworthy, more tolerated to CAMY, enjoyed physicality of CAMY, had more attention to CAMY’s function, hoped to possessing CAMY for showing off, and felt comforts and togetherness with CAMY. In the end, design guidelines applying pet’s characteristics on interactive product and future improvements of this study were discussed.
우리를 둘러싼 환경이 더욱 복잡하고 지능화되면서, 복잡한 제품을 더욱 감성적이고 즐겁게 사용하기 위한 제품 모델의 제시와 검증이 중요해 졌다. 이러한 목적에서, 본 연구에서는 지능화된 미래 제품을 보다 감성적이고 의미 있게 사용하기 위한 아이디어로서 제품에 반려동물의 메타포를 적용할 것을 제안한다. 연구의 첫 번째 단계로, 문헌 연구와 인터뷰를 통해 사람과 개의 인터랙션을 이해하였고, 이를 바탕으로 반려동물의 특성을 지닌 제품 디자인에 활용 가능한 반려동물의 핵심 특성 세 가지를 도출하였다. 제품이 개인화되고 최적화되는 특성, 능동적 인터랙션을 제공하는 특성, 적극적인 감성적 피드백을 제공하는 특성이 그것이다. 다음으로는 이를 제품 사례에 적용하여, 실제 디자인에서는 어떻게 나타날 수 있는지 검증하고자 하였다. 개발된 제품 사례 CAMY는 반려동물의 특성을 지닌 PC카메라이다. CAMY는 반려동물의 세 가지 특성을 나타내는 대표 시나리오와 함께 가상과 현실의 두 가지 실재성을 동시에 지니는 혼합 현실의 특성을 지니고 있다. 일련의 사용자 평가를 통해, CAMY의 효용성 및 가치, 그리고 개선 사항에 대해 탐색이 이루어졌다. 사용자들은 CAMY에게 똑똑하고 신뢰가 가는 인상을 받았으며, 관용적인 태도를 보였다. 또한 CAMY의 물리적 움직임이 관심을 끌었으며, CAMY의 기능에 더욱 집중할 수 있었다. 그들은 CAMY를 자랑이나 과시하기 위한 목적으로 소유하길 원했다. CAMY는 사용자들로 하여금 함께 있다는 위안의 느낌을 제공하기도 하였다. 마지막에는 CAMY의 사례를 통해, 반려동물의 특성과 혼합 현실의 특성을 지닌 제품의 디자인 고려 사항, 그리고 발전 방향에 대하여 각각 논의가 이루어졌다.
