In the present study, we investigate the Heat Transfer Performance of a cross-cut heat sink in natural convection and how the cross-cut changes the flow field, which is strongly related to the heat transfer coefficient. The effects of fin height, base thickness differences, and cross-cut length on thermal performance are investigated. The tested heat sink system was constructed using a symmetric geometry to minimize the heat leakage from the base plate. The flow characteristics of the heat sink system are investigated by numerical simulation tools and validated experimentally. The thermal performance of the cross-cut heat sink is approximately 6% better than that of the plate fin heat sink when the cross-cut is located at the point where the difference between the heat sink base thicknesses occurs. The heat transfer coefficient is improved at the upper part of the heat sink because the thermal boundary layer restarts at the cross-cut region and grows slowly. It is concluded that the cross-cut improves the thermal performance of the heat sink in natural convection when the base thickness difference exists.
