This article argues that the connectivity of a country with other partners through trade is an important factor for positive economic growth. A more enhanced connectivity positively contributes to the process of technological diffusion and innovation associated with investments. The article empirically investigates the role that trade connections plays in enhancing the positive relationship on economic growth. Also as trade connections are examined to be channels of risk contagion, this article also examines the relationship of con-nectivity and the fluctuation of economic growth. By using a panel set of 124 countries for 16 years, the em-pirical investigation presented in the article strongly suggests that connectivity has a sufficient and positive relationship economic growth. The role of connectivity is showed to be positive for the OECD and European regions but is found to be negative in the growth for LDC and Africa countries. On the other hand, countries with higher connectivity showed a greater fluctuation than other countries easily effected by the impact of partners. By such examinations, this article shows the two sided effects of connectivity on a country’s wealth.
본 연구는 국가의 경제발전에 미치는 요인 중, 네트워크상에서 국가의 위치의 역할에 대한 연구를 하였다. 지금까지 국가의 경제발전은 무역량과 자원, 정책 및 인구 등에 의하여 크게 영향을 받는다고 알려져 있다. 우리 연구는 무역량이 아닌 무역의 다각화 혹은 무역의 다변화가 국가의 경제 발전에 영향을 미칠 것 이라고 가정하고 연구하였다. 또한 국가의 연결성은 기술교류와 혁신을 통하여 국가 경제 발전에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있는 반면, 한 국가의 위기 시에는 무역경로를 통하여 위기를 다른 국가에게 전이 시킬 수 있는 양면적인 측면에 대하여서도 또한 중점적으로 연구하였다.
연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 124개국 15년간의 패널 데이터를 이용한 이번 연구는 다중회귀분석을 통해 기존의 연구들에서 주목되었던 무역량은 전세계적으로 국가들의 경제 발전에 유의하지 못한 결과값을 보였다. 특히 OECD와 같은 부유한 국가들은 더 많은 무역량이 경제성장을 저해하는 결과를 보일 수 있었다. 반면에 국가의 연결성은 OECD 및 개발도상국들 모두를 포함하여 유의하고 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 보였다. 또한 연결성은 국가 부의 변동성에도 유의한 결과를 보이면서 다중회귀분석 모델 중 가장 영향력이 큰 변수로 나타났다. 이에 두 가지 다중회귀분석을 통하여 연결성이 국가의 부에도 긍정적인 영향을 미치지만 위기 전이 등을 통하여 부의 변동성에도 영향을 미치는 결론을 도출하여 연결성의 양면성에 대하여 알 수 있었다.
