Word of mouth(WOM) is defined as communication about products or services among the consumers. Having lower costs and being more effective, by the evolution of internet, than other traditional marketing activities, the WOM becomes the popular and efficient marketing tool. Therefore, demand for researching how to control the WOM is increasing. Prior researches have focused on analyzing the relationship between WOM’s attributes and revenues, or predicting the future revenues via the WOM attributes which are mainly volume and valence. In this article, I investigate the effects of the second tier movie’s WOM on first tier movie’s WOM, when they are in competition. Using the Korean Movie Industry data, I show that the bigger the volume of second tier movie’s WOM is, the bigger the first tier movie’s WOM volume is. The valence, measured by the average of cumulative rating, of the second tier movie’s WOM, however, has a negative correlation with the first tier movie’s WOM valence, and it has U-shaped effects on first tier movie’s WOM volume.
