Motion paths, or the curvilinear trajectories drawn by the action of body parts, such as hands, feet or head, offer a good and intuitive representation of the motion of a character. Skillful animators use these curves to guide the animation or check whether the motion flows naturally. Several motion editing methods allow users to manipulate those curves directly. Among curve manipulating algorithms, the as-rigid-as-possible (ARAP) method is an interactive algorithm aiming to preserve the original shape and length of the curve being manipulated.
This paper proposes a 3D ARAP curve editing algorithm based on the original ARAP method for 2D curves. We separate the 3D manipulation into 2D sub-problems by projecting the curve to 2 planes. By performing the principal component analysis of the given curve we ensure that the curve is fully captured after projection. This paper also proposes a motion editing framework combining a marker-based inverse kinematics solver with the proposed curve editing algorithm.
