The scale of electricity power system has been rapidly increased in these few years with the unexpectedly high demand which resulted in high vulnerability from initial failure of demand forecasting, disasters and random failures, and the ripple effect, so the Korean electricity power system has been suspected its reliability and security. We present a basic case study to analysis the present Korean electricity power system how much the system is reliable from the demand variability at first, and the given scenarios in the scope of national or local at second based on its real formation and demand data. Through this study, we figure out that Korean power system is generally reliable but the initial broken of large power plants such as nuclear power plants usually located in the southern coast of Korea but supply the electricity directly and indirectly to the northern capital area and the high-voltage power transmission facility which connect two areas in a long distance with large amount occurs the cascading failures to the whole power grid and it is concluded to the huge failures of the demand facilities in the industrial complex and capital areas. The impact of initial failure was bigger when the initial number of failure increases, and the distance of the failed facility is closer and focused in one local area. To reduce the cascading failure, government decided to introduce the special protection system which shutdown the partial load. By introducing the system in the given data, we also evaluate effectiveness of the system and point out the wrong direction for the future reinforcement plan for the electricity power system and introducing special protection system plan. By this study, we can figure out how to analysis the electricity power system not focusing to the one local areas or to the one specific reason of failure, and contribute to design a reliable electricity power system with considering cascading failures and reflecting its electrical characteristics.
