Mechanical keypads on handheld devices have been replaced by touch screens in order to increase the size of the visual display unit. With this challenge in mobile technology, many studies targeting mobile devices concentrated on creating tactile sensations and developing actuators for tactile display. However, it is noticeable that vibrotactile actuators just ‘imitate’ kinaesthetic sensations. In general, users rub and press target objects when they try to perceive them. In other words, both kinaesthetic and vibrotactile feedbacks should be simulta-neously conveyed to users for creating realistic haptic sensation. To provide both kinaesthetic and vibrotactile feedbacks in single device, various types of actuators named as KinaesTactile actuator have been developed based on magnetorheological fluids. But it was difficult to decrease the size of the actuator and previous Ki-naesTactile actuators had the initial force missing problem which means the loss of resistive force at the initial stroke region. The purpose of this research is to present a new mechanism for miniaturizing and optimizing the KinaesTactile actuator. To maximize the total resistive force generated by KinaesTactile actuator in a small size, optimization technique using SQP algorithm was utilized. Through this optimal design process, design variables were determined. To predict the proposed actuator’s behavior and performance, an analytical model for compu-ting the resistive force generated by MR fluids was formulated. By analyzing this model, the feasibility of the new design was verified. Finally, we implemented the proposed actuator, which has dimensions of 10 mm × 10 mm × 6.5 mm. Then, experimental setup was constructed with dynamic mechanical analyzer, RSA3. The ap-plied load with respect to pressed depth was measured by varying the input current and frequency. The results of the kinaesthetic feedback measurement showed that the proposed KinaesTactile actuator can generate the resis-tive force of range from 2.0 N to 5.0 N. It is enough to display several steps of the force level to human’s finger. The results of the vibrotactile feedback measurement showed that the proposed KinaesTactile actuator can gen-erate vibrotactile feedback within a wide frequency range. It was also confirmed that the initial force missing problem is clearly reduced. Several kinds of usability tests for verifying performance of developed KinaesTac-tile actuator in the view of human were designed and performed with 9 subjects. The results from usability tests showed that the users can reliably discriminate at least five levels of kinaesthetic sensations and seven levels of vibrotactile sensations in both low and high frequency range. Furthermore, displacement sensing function mea-suring changes of inductance level of the solenoid coil in the form of the voltage was integrated with actuating function to provide more diverse haptic sensations. Thus, the proposed KinaesTactile actuator demonstrated that it can enhance the sense of immersion for users by providing variety and realistic haptic sensations in small electronic devices.
