Development of Internet service enables newspaper companies to provide translated articles in various languages. However, translated news articles show difference compared to original ones in contents, nuance and ways of news delivery. This could cause miscommunication between readers who use different languages and further conflicts among international communities.
For this study, 20 English articles attached with translated Korean ones were sampled and three surveyors were asked to tell whether they have differences. In result, 75% of the sampled articles turned out to be different with their translated ones. Also, length of the articles showed inconsistency with their translated ones. English newspaper reporters who wrote both articles also answered that translation affect news reporting. This study focuses on why translated news articles make difference with original ones. Based on the result, this study suggests the way news consumers and journalists as well as media companies cope with these inconsistency.
본 연구는 인터넷을 통해 원문기사와 함께 외국어로 번역·제공되는 기사에 차이가 나는 현상을 살펴보고, 그 원인을 분석해 번역기사에 대한 비판적 읽기의 필요성을 제시하고, 더 나아가서는 번역 기사를 제공하는 언론사의 역할과 책임에 대해 조망하는데 그 목적과 의의가 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 번역이 뉴스보도에 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 가설을 세웠다. 언어에 따라 수용할 수 있는 현상과 사안이 다르고, 담아내기가 힘든 사회적·문화적 현상이 존재한다. 이를 ‘언어의 선택적 사실보도’로 정의하고, 언어학적·언론학적 관점으로 접근해 분석했다. 기자의 신념과 성향 혹은 언론사의 논조와 사색에 따라 동일한 사안이 다른 내용의 뉴스로 생산되거나 TV나 라디오, 신문 등 매체에 따라 뉴스가치가 달라지고 보도방식에 차이가 나는 원리에 적용했다.
