Civil engineering structure health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS) are being developed to pre-vent unexpected accidents and to replace conventional maintenance services. In order to perform HUMS successfully in real applications, various sensors are installed at critical points of large size structures to moni-tor and diagnose the conditions of the structures. However, there are some disadvantages for the conven-tional electric-based sensors such as the addition of mass, wiring problems, and EMI (electromagnetic inter-ference).
Thus, optical fiber-based sensors are being studied to overcome such existing problems of the conven-tional electric-based sensors. However, although the conventional optical fiber-based sensing systems are suitable for multiplexing, it presents still difficulties in performing multi-parameter measurements simultane-ously with multiplexing. Moreover, with the lack of an integrated system for multi-parameter measurement, various kinds of equipment are necessary, hence resulting in the critical problem of added weight to the struc-tures.
To guarantee the accuracy and reliability of HUMSs in real applications, strain-displacement based multiplexing and multi-parameter measurements using integrated optical sensor systems are presented and developed in this study. First of all, two novel sensor principles are presented in order to resolve limitations in installation and complex cabling problems of the conventional transmission type grating based fiber optic sensors. The first sensor principle was realized using a reflective grating panel after investigation of the sensor signal characteristics according to the grating panel pattern. Based on the first sensor principle, a fiber optic accelerometer prototype was fabricated and investigated. Furthermore, in order to realize the proposed sensor principle as an accelerometer, a single degree of freedom system is developed. The appropriate leaf spring pattern is investigated for high sensitivity and large linear motion range without rotation and lateral motion of the seismic mass through a static and dynamic analysis of the single degree of freedom system using the commercial software, ABAQUS 6.7.
Then, the second sensor principle which is an expanded version of the first principle was considered for industrial applications with a stable signal acquisition. An optical fiber-based displacement sensor was developed, which is superior to commercial displacement sensors in terms of large extendable measurement range while maintaining equally high sensitivity, linearity, and accuracy. Furthermore, a fiber optic incli-nometer prototype was fabricated and verified. Next, two kinds of fiber optic accelerometers for use at room temperature and high temperature, respectively, were developed. The high temperature endurable accelerometer can withstand high temperatures up to 130°C and possesses high sensitivity for high temperature areas. In addition, the fiber optic inclinometer was fabricated with a small size and light weight in comparison with previously researched fiber optic incli-nometers. The proposed fiber optic inclinometer, which achieves a full scale measurement range from -90° to 90°, simple structure, simple detection principle, and high sensitivity, measured the gravity-referenced static acceleration. Thus, the proposed two sensor principles resolved difficulties in corner installations and complex cabling problems in multipoint sensing due to the 50% simplified cabling by employing collimated optical fibers as transceivers, which allow the fibers to be placed on only one side of the sensor case. This is research regarding displacement based fiber optic sensors for multi-parameter measurement.
In order to measure in various points simultaneously using such developed fiber optic sensors, a multi-plex measurement optical system model using wavelength division method is proposed and 4 optical division modules were fabricated. Furthermore, an integrated optical fiber system which can operate optical sensors of 2 different mechanisms with a single light source is proposed. In other words, an optical system was to be designed where the wavelength variation-based fiber Bragg grating sensor can be utilized simultaneously with the developed grating-based sensors in order to achieve the inherent advantages of FBG usage with strain measurement. This contributes the integration of two different extrinsic and intrinsic fiber optic sensors. Therefore, the integrated optical sensing system suggested in this paper can measure multiple parameters such as strain, displacement, slope, and acceleration with a single optical source.
In order to verify the applicability of the integrated optical fiber sensor system, a secondary plumbing pipe structure was selected as the application subject. This research provides possibility of simultaneous mul-ti-parameter measurements with multiplexing through comprehensive sensor signal acquisition for SHM un-der an integrated fiber optic system. Furthermore, for effective impact monitoring on the cylindrical structure, impact source localization was studied using 6 multiplexed FBG sensors in one optical fiber line according to the sensor array and number of used sensors on the pipe structure.
With this integrated optical sensing system, it is possible to measure strains of six points with a high sampling rate of 100 kHz as well as displacements and accelerations at four points simultaneously. Therefore, the results of this study can contribute to quantitative determination of the current structural condition based on the multi-point and multi-parameter measurable integrated optical fiber sensor system presented in this paper. Also, effective maintenance schedules can be established using accumulated acquired data. Thus, this research can enhance the possibility of applying SHM techniques to real civil engineering structures. Then, it is expected that these results will contribute to improving the reliability and safety of various structures.
