Attosecond high-harmonic radiation is a new light source suitable for investigating ultrafast phenomena occurring in atoms and molecules. High-harmonic pulses can be generated from atoms driven by intense femtosecond laser pulses. For achieving attosecond pulses approaching the transform-limited duration, the compensation of attosecond chirp, inherently existing in harmonic pulses, should be performed without losing much harmonic intensity. With the selection of a suitable material with negative group delay dispersion at the relevant wavelength region, the positive attosecond chirp of harmonic pulses can be compensated. By applying this idea, near transform-limited 63-as pulses, very close to the transform-limited duration of 47 as, was achieved from Ne harmonics. For the temporal characterization of attosecond pulses from high harmonics, the RABITT (reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions) method was applied to verify the chirp compensation of attosecond pulses in materials. For the complete temporal characterization of attosecond pulses, the FROG CRAB (frequency-resolved optical gating for complete reconstruction of attosecond bursts) method has been carried out to retrieve accurately the detailed temporal structure of high harmonics. The comparison of the reconstructed profiles by the RABITT and by the FROG CRAB showed good agreement.
The ultrafast photoionization dynamics of He has been explored. The autoionization of He via the doubly excited 2s2p state, the first member of autoionization states, was investigated by applying attsoecond harmonic pulses and time-delayed femtosecond laser pulses. The FROG CRAB method was also applied for determining the decay time of the doubly excited state in the autoionization process of He. The decay time was measured to be 16.1 ± 1.0 fs, consistent to the previously reported value of 17 fs. The time-domain measurement with attosecond temporal resolution will be a powerful technique for investigating ultrafast phenomena in atoms and molecules.
RABITT (reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transition) FROG CRAB (frequency-resolved optical gating for complete reconstruction of attosecond bursts)
