Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have an electrolyte that is a solid, non-porous metal oxide, usually Y2O3-stablilized ZrO2. The cell operates at 600-1000 oC where ionic conduction by oxygen ions takes place. Typically, the anode is a Ni-ZrO2 cermet and the cathode is Sr-doped LaMnO3. There is no liquid electrolyte with its attendant material corrosion or electrolyte management problems. The high temperature of the SOFC, however, places stringent requirements on its materials. The development of suitable low cost materials and the low-cost fabrication of ceramic structures are presently the key technical challenges facing SOFCs. The objective of this dissertation is to characterize interconnect and cathode materials for SOFCs.
In chapter III, LCC/glass composite interconnect materials for high temperature SOFCs were studied to improve the sintering ability and electrical conductivity of La0.8Ca0.2CrO3 (LCC). Glass is known as a sintering aid for improving sintering ability. It promotes liquid phase sintering and improves densification during the sintering process. The components of the glass used in this study are B2O3, SrO, La2O3, SiO2 and Al2O3.The phase stability, microstructure, electrical conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) were measured to determine the optimal glass content in the composite materials. All of the tested composite materials showed perovskite structures and dense microstructures. It was found that the addition of up to 5 wt.% glass increased the sintering ability and the electrical conductivity in both air and hydrogen atmospheres. The glass powder enhances the sintering behavior because it acts as a liquid phase sintering aid and the Sr2+ ion in glass powder generates and . These lead to improvement in the electrical conductivity of the material. The TEC of the composites indicated compatibility with other cell components. The above results present that LCC/glass composite materials are suitable to be used as interconnects for SOFCs.
In chapter IV, the Ag/glass composite interconnects for anode-supported flat-tube cell operated below 700 oC was investigated to optimize the glass contents in composites. The phase stability between Ag and glass was observed by XRD analysis and Ag/glass composites showed phase stability without chemical reactions. Also, coating layers of Ag/glass composites represented low values of ASR, even though ASR increased as glass contents increased. The dense coating layers of Ag/glass composite were formed without pores and low gas leak rates were evaluated due to dense microstructures. Based on the above results, anode-supported flat-tube cell performances with Ag/glass composite coating layers were carried out at 700 oC and a cell with Ag + glass 10 wt.% coating layers showed the highest value. Furthermore, the cell with Ag + glass 10 wt.% coating layer maintained initial OCV ( 1.02 V ) for 240 hrs, when other cells showed decreased OCV. These results demonstrate that 10 wt.% of glass addition to Ag would be content with requests for a high-performance interconnect for anode-supported flat-tube cell operated below 700 oC.
In chapter V, the effect of Ag and Ag-CeO2 infiltration to the LSCF cathode for intermediate-temperature SOFCs were studied. Although Ag is known as well-investigated catalyst, the cell with Ag infiltrated cathode has a disadvantage of poor long-term stability due to Ag agglomeration during cell operation. The porous La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3 (LSCF) electrode on anode-supported flat-tube cells were infiltrated with Ag and Ag-CeO2 and the properties of cells with infiltrated cathode was characterized to improve catalytic activity and durability of Ag infiltrated cathode. At first, the microstructure, cell performance and durability of cell with Ag infiltrated cathode were evaluated. It was found that the infiltration of 18 wt.% Ag showed the maximum power density compare to cells with 9 and 27 wt.% Ag infiltrated cathode. However, the durability decreased as the amount of Ag infiltration increased. In order to improve durability, the Ag-CeO2 was introduced and the properties of cell were measured. The 18 wt.% of Ag and 4 wt.% of CeO2 were infiltrated to LSCF cathode and the increased durability was measured.
