Today`s design concepts and a discussion of the paradigm derive their ideological background from the West. The background of this study begins with the understanding Western thought and ideology which say that human beings place themselves in confrontation with nature and deal with all of the objects and phenomenon in nature as a tool to gratify their desires. It then moves on to seeing today`s design and its paradigm based on Orientalism and Eastern philosophy and differences as compared to the West.
In this study, a water container is developed by introducing new design attributes based on Eastern thought and ideology. This is referred to as `Properties-Centered` within the design paradigm of the East. Finally, a new design attribute and criteria for valuation are sought, and the concepts pertaining to `Properties-Centered` are established by proving and confirming the value and possibilities of Property-Centered design in the future. This study focuses on finding the essentials of today`s `design` or `designing` by researching the major thoughts and ideology of the East which analyze the essentials of all nature and attitudes of human beings as they pertain to nature, and on suggesting a new design attribute for `designing` by grasping the `properties` of objects. The significance of this study is that it finds and proves the new value of the design process based on `Property-Centered Design`, which cannot be found in existing design processes based on the design concepts and paradigms of the West.
In summary, not only current design concepts and paradigms but also the design attributes based on Western thought change continuously with the stream of times and trends. However, based on Eastern thought, it is possible to suggest new design concepts and paradigms which are not easily changed, as `designing` can be translated by Eastern thought and ideology as a means for seeking and studying the `properties` of objects which are the essential attributes of objects, and because the essentials of the objects never change.
오늘날의 디자인의 개념 및 그 패러다임에 대한 논의는, 그 사상적 배경이 서양의 역사/철학 사상에서 비롯되었다 해도 무관하다. 본 연구의 배경은, 인간은 스스로를 자연과 대립시키고 모든 사물 현상을 자신의 욕망을 채우기 위한 도구로 대하게 된다는 서구적 사고 및 사상을 이해하고, 이와 다른 관점인 동양의 사상 및 철학을 바탕으로 오늘날의 디자인과 그 패러다임을 바라보는 것에서 비롯된다.
본 연구에서는 기존의 서구적 사상 중심으로 이루어진 디자인의 개념 및 패러다임에 `물성(物性) 중심` 이라는 동양적 사상에 입각한 새로운 디자인 속성 (Design Attribute)을 도입하여 이를 바탕으로 디자인 개발 사례로서 물 보관 용기를 개발한다. 그리고 그것의 가치와 향후 제품 디자인에 적용 가능성 검증을 통해 ‘물성 중심’의 개념 확립은 물론, 궁극적으로는 새로운 가치판단 기준 및 디자인 속성을 모색한다. 따라서 본 연구는 삼라만상(森羅萬象)의 본질 및 그것에 대한 인간의 태도를 다룬 동양의 주요 사상 및 관련 개념들을 조사하고 정리하여 오늘날의 디자인 행위의 본질을 모색한다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 새로운 디자인 속성의 제안 및 실체적 디자인 사례를 구현하여 기존의 서구 사상 중심의 디자인 개념 및 패러다임, 디자인 프로세스에서는 발견할 수 없었던 새로운 가치를 찾아내 검증함에 연구의 의의가 있다.
요컨대, 기존의 서구사상 중심의 디자인 개념 및 패러다임은 시대의 흐름에 따라 변하고 있으며, 그에 따라 디자인 속성 및 가치판단 기준들 또한 변한다. 반면 동양의 사상적 관점에서는 오늘날의 디자인 행위의 개념을 인위(人爲)로서 거부함과 동시에 대상(物)의 `물성(物性)` 탐구를 추구하고 있기에, 시대의 흐름 따위에 쉽게 변하지 않는 디자인 개념 및 패러다임을 제안할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 동양사상에 입각해서 본다면 대상(物)의 `물성` 탐구가 곧 디자인이고, 이 `물성`은 쉽게 변하지 않는 대상의 본질(本質)이기 때문이다.
