As the new social demands are generated from the rise of economic, environmental, and social sustainability in present-day society, Philanthropic Reusing System - a system supporting solving social problems directly or indirectly by using useless goods or waste - began to grab the attention. Philanthropic Reusing System is usually operated by nonprofit/nongovernmental organizations (NPO, NGO) or social enterprises for diverse social supporting purposes. In spite of its all good cause, it faces problems to invigorate the system: passive and inactive public participation in donating and buying used goods, and participation against the aim of the system (seeking for only cheap goods of high value brand products for resale, or donating only useless, almost waste, goods).
This study tries to revitalize public leading Philanthropic Reusing System by suggesting system design guide-line. As a result, this study will help NPO/NGO, social enterprises, and designers who are related to this area to understand about this system, suggest various opportunity and possibility, and lead to effective operate the system. Since there are many confusing concepts, such as second-hand market, reuse design, charity shops, etc., this study clearly and comprehensively defines Philanthropic Reusing System, and subdivides it by its purpose and operating type from wide case study. Also, between many stakeholders, it clarifies the im-portance and necessity of public participation. To find the problems in system design and seek ways to en-hance public participation, this study runs empirical studies: in-depth interview with employees of this system, observation and in-depth interview with shop visitors, and home visiting and inventory of stockpile with po-tential donor. From the result of empirical study, system design guideline for enhancing public participation was drawn. In order to verify this guideline, a design case was made base on it. Also, user study and expert interview ware done with the case to evaluate its usefulness, and discuss its applicability and improvement points.
This study is response to demand of design participation from society, especially NGO/NPO or social enter-prise which handle social problems professionally, and fulfillment of designer’s social responsibility from designers’ self-awareness about social problem.
경제적, 환경적, 사회적으로 지속가능성이 대두되고 있는 현대 사회의 요구에 맞추어 사용이 종료된 제품이나 폐기물을 자원화 하여 사회적 문제를 해결하는 데에 직, 간접적인 도움을 주는 자선적 재사용 시스템(Philanthropic Reusing System)이 주목 받고 있다. 비영리조직 또는 사회적 기업 등 다양한 형태로 운영되고 있는 이들은 이상적인 목적으로 운영되는 것에 비해, 물건 기증에 대한 비적극성과 중고제품 구매에 대한 선입견에 의하여 시민의 참여가 저조하고, 쓰레기처분의 대용으로 이용한다거나 단순히 저렴한 가격의 구매만을 목적으로 이용하여 본래의 취지와는 다르게 운영되고 있다. 본 연구는 시민참여 증진을 유도하는 자선적 재사용 시스템 디자인을 위한 가이드라인을 제안하여, 재사용을 통한 사회적 기업 설립이나 자선사업을 기획하는 단체/디자이너의 시스템에 대한 이해를 돕고, 사업의 목적에 따라 취할 수 있는 전략을 소개하며, 이를 통한 자선적 재사용 시스템의 다양한 가능성을 제시하며, 효과적인 운영을 돕는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 현재 중고시장, 재사용 시스템 등과 같이 혼재된 시스템 개념에서 자선적 재사용 시스템의 영역을 명확히 정의하고, 사례연구를 통하여 자선적 재사용 시스템을 포괄적으로 정리하며, 시스템의 형태나 목적에 따라 세분화하여 각각의 특성에 대하여 개괄적으로 밝힌다. 또한, 본 시스템의 운영에 있어 시민 참여의 중요성을 밝히고, 이에 가장 영향이 많이 받는 시민주도형 시스템의 문제점과 현황에 대하여 이해한다. 자선적 재사용 시스템에 대한 실증적 연구를 통하여 운영 현황과 문제점을 밝히고, 기증과정과 구매과정에 있어 사용자의 참여를 이끌기 위하여 사용자 조사를 실시, 현재의 문제점과 해결 방안을 모색하였다. 이를 통하여 시민의 적극적 참여를 활성화 하는 시스템 디자인 가이드라인을 도출하였다. 제안된 가이드라인을 검증하기 위하여 가이드라인을 바탕으로 시스템 디자인 사례를 개발하였다. 이후 사용자 조사와 전문가 인터뷰를 통하여 개발한 가이드라인과 사례의 효용성을 평가하였다. 본 논문은 확장된 지속가능성 속에서 사회문제를 다루는 단체(비영리단체, 사회적 기업)의 운영에 대한 디자인 요구에 대한 부응으로써, 디자인계 내부의 사회적 역할에 대한 자각을 통한 확장된 디자이너의 역할 수행으로써 의의가 있다.
