Plasmonics is a rapidly growing and evolving field on the most advanced of optical sciences, photonic, thin film and nanotechnology. Light enhancement of an emitter by excitation of the surface plasmon resonance is one of the most attractive approaches for realizing plasmonic devices. In this studies, we investigated metal nanostructure mediated PLED devices to improve power efficiency. Ag nanostructures were fabricated by the thermal evaporation technique and nanoimprint lithography. We attempt to improve both internal and external quantum efficiency of PLED devices using silver (Ag) nanostructure.
First, we investigated light enhancement of polymer light emitting devices through Ag nanostructures fabri-cated via a simple and effective method involving thermal evaporation. We controlled localized surface plasmon (LSP) by Ag nanoparticles and propagating surface plasmon (PSP) by Ag nanofilms. Upon the connection of Ag nano-islands, charge density oscillations confined to metallic nanoparticles disappeared, and a propagation surface plasmon mode began. Dispersion relations of the Ag/PEDOT:PSS interface can lower the asymptotic limit due to the higher refractive index of PEDOT:PSS relative to that of the air. PL intensity at the emitting layer side was increased as the thickness of Ag nanostructures increased due to the strong excitation of surface plasmons. PL intensity at the ITO substrate side was closely related to the transmittance of the Ag nanostructures. The PL intensity of the ITO substrate side showed a peak value for a sample of thickness of 12 nm having connected islandized Ag nanostructures.
We measured TR-PL of Ag nanostructure mediated conjugated polymers at room temperature and low temperature of 15 K, respectively. Relative strong emission from the interchain excitons of the film-like Ag nanostructure was proved by time-resolved photoluminescence (TR-PL) measurement. Decay time and relative weight coefficient fitted by the overall PL decay curves from the bi-exponential. Decay time related to the interchain exctions decreased and relative weight coefficient related to the interchain exctions increased, as the thickness of Ag nanostructures increased. Enhanced light emission from the intrachain excitons was observed by coupling the localized surface plasmon resonance with the intrachain band of the conjugated polymer using Ag nanoparticles. Light emission from the interchain exctions was enhanced by exploiting both the increased strength of the interchain dipole due to the image dipole and the coupling between excitons and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs).
Luminance in the Ag nanostructure incorporated PLEDs was decreased with respect to the Ref. sample, thus the current efficiency and power efficiency were decreased. We investigated the SPP induced by cathode electrode: SPP2 between the cathode electrode and MEH-PPV, and SPP3 between the cathode electrode and air. The effect of SPP3 is negligible if the thickness of the cathode electrode is more than 120 nm. However, the effect of SPP2 is large than that of SPP1 (originally expected) due to the short distance from cathode electrode to emitter of MEH-PPV. As a result, we concluded that the influence of SPP2 is more significant to the electroluminescence of Ag nanostructure-incorporated PLED devices.
Next, we fabricated the hexagonal Ag dot array with the lattice constant of 500 nm and 400 nm, respectively. We investigated absorbance spectra with the unpolarized incident light for the hexagonal Ag dot array of lattice constant of 500 nm. We observed strong LSP resonance near the wavelength of 800 nm originated from the hexagonal array. The three peaks near the wavelength of 400 nm were waveguide mode originated from the 2nd order bragg scattering vector. The two peaks near the wavelength of 650 nm were waveguide mode originated from the $1^{st}$ order bragg scattering vector. Dispersion relation by the calculation of TE0 mode agrees with the dispersion relation by the measurement from the tilted absorbance spectra. The peaks in PL enhancement ratio closely related to the coupling condition to the waveguide mode by the bragg vector. Therefore, the light trapped by the waveguide mode in the organic and ITO layer can be extracted effectively.
Variation of current density in the PLED with Ag dot array was similar to the PLED without Ag dot array. However, luminance in the PLED with Ag dot array increased with the respect to the PLED without Ag dot ar-ray. As a results, current efficiency and power efficiency increased in the PLED with Ag dot array. Approximately 50 % increase in current efficiency and power efficiency was observed at the current density of 20 mA/$cm^2$. Some part of light will be extracted from the waveguide mode in the organic and ITO layer in the PLED with Ag dot array due to the Bragg scattering. Therefore, the luminance in the PLED with Ag dot array increased with respect to the PLED without Ag dot array.
