In this thesis, a new microshutter display device has been proposed and developed. In contrast to conventional microshutters that the actuator itself is also the microshutter plate at the same time, this microshutter uses part-division design which divides the shutter plate from the actuator. Also, unlike the other microshutters that actuate electrostatically, we use a thermal bimorph actuator which is composed of two layer of a dielectric layer and a heating resistor layer.
The conventional microshutters showed a trade-off characteristics between the light efficiency and the actuation voltage. By use of the part-division design, we achieved almost 75% of opening ratio which affects light efficiency, and there is a possibility of higher opening ratio by designing the larger shutter plate. The high actuation voltage problem of the conventional microshutters could be solved by thermal actuation mechanism. The thermal actuator helped this microshutter having the low actuation voltage (~2V) and the large displacement. As designed, the microshutter had both the high light efficiency and the low actuation voltage at the same time.
For an exact formation of the microshutter, an analytical model was developed on the basis of the beam equations. By modeling results, the thickness of each layer of the bimorph actuator was designed and the lateral dimension was decided by consideration of human factors.
A fabrication process of five mask steps was suggested, and the microshutter was successfully fabricated. The microshutter showed the exact curvature as designed, and its uniformity was confirmed by the SEM images of arrays.
The fully-closed voltage was found as 0.8V by capacitance measurement. By controlling the applied voltage, the opening ratio was varied, which meant that the grey scale could be analogously controlled. Resonant frequency and switching speed could be estimated by movies taken by a high speed camera. The microshutter was damped oscillated 47 times in a 0.1 sec, and its maximum speed was measured around 1ms.
Finally, we have suggested killer applications for the proposed microshutter. Bistable display is a kind of display which has two stable positions of on-state and off-state so that an image can stay longer even when the power supply is stopped. When the microshutter is used as the bistable display device, it has advantages of the low actuation voltage and relatively high speed. Also, this microshutter can be used for three operational modes of transmissive, reflective, and transparent. Feasibility for bistable mechanism was confirmed by its basic mechanism test.
