There exists a widely accepted view that the financial crisis in the late 1990’s in Korea was largely due to the accelerated, yet not-well prepared opening up of the capital market and the opacity of financial regulations. The reform on transparency of financial regulations and appropriate openness are supposed to have a positive impact on financial stability. This thesis examines the effect of openness and opacity on exchange rate volatility in Korea.
An empirical analysis is conducted after devising an extant measure of opacity and openness as well as the regression model to observe the effect of openness and opacity on stability of Korea’s foreign exchange market. The result shows that, in certain period, the openness deepens the exchange rate volatility, while opacity (also must be removed) shows no significant negative effect on the exchange rate volatility.
