In many emerging economies, business groups have been developed in different ways and have played an important role in the economic growth of each country. Especially, South Korea has been at the center of attention due to its government-driven economic development. However, there has not been enough research in relation to chaebol, the Korean-style business group. This thesis investigates the theoretical grounds of and the current questions in the field of business group research and addresses the methodological issues in researching chaebol, the most prominent form of Korean business groups. The methodological issues include the definition of business group, The affiliates controlled by family, the level of analysis, the dissimilarities among the business groups, the consistency of affiliates and the changing trends in corporate governance. In this thesis I would like to provide various topics for the future business group research of and suggest a new direction for the studies of “Korean-style economic development model”.
기업집단은 많은 개발도상국에서 각기 다른 형태로 발전해 왔으며 경제 성장에 중요한 역할을 하였다. 특히 한국은 국가주도형 경제발전모델로서 전세계의 주목을 받고 있지만, 한국형 기업집단인 재벌은 충분한 연구가 이루어지지 못하고 있다. 그래서 이 논문에서는 기존 기업집단 연구에 대한 이론적 토대와 기업집단 연구의 현 이슈를 짚어보고 있으며, 한국의 고유한 기업집단 형태인 재벌의 특징에 기반하여 한국의 기업집단을 연구하는 데 있어서 방법론적인 이슈들을 정리해 보았다. 기업집단에 대한 정의, 지분관계가 아닌 혈연관계에 따른 계열사 지배, 기업집단 분석 대상의 범위, 기업집단들 간의 이질성, 계열사들의 계속성, 기업지배구조의 변화 등이 이것에 포함된다. 이 논문이 앞으로의 기업집단 연구 주제에 대한 새로운 아이디어를 제공할 수 있고 한국형 경제발전모델에 대한 연구방향을 제시할 수 있기를 기대한다.
