This paper investigates individual firm’s idiosyncratic volatility in Korean stock markets. I measures monthly idiosyncratic volatility of an individual firm using Fama-French (1993) three-factor model based on Korean stock markets and alternative three-factor model which is suggested by Yoon, Koo, Eom, and Han (2009). The result shows that idiosyncratic volatilities estimated by two models are similar, and I find no evi-dence of upward trends of idiosyncratic risk reported by Campbell et al. (2001) in Korea. The result also shows that individual firm’s idiosyncratic volatility trends up or down over the sample period on significant portion of firms. The portion of firms with increasing idiosyncratic volatility trend and decreasing trend varies over time, and most of the firm’s idiosyncratic volatility rejects the hypothesis of unit root. Using variables which represent the performance of each firm, I find the increase in each firm’s idiosyncratic volatility is the result of negative change of firm’s performance. Further evidence suggests that firms with an increasing idio-syncratic volatility tend to have low idiosyncratic volatility when they were first listed.
