This study analyzes the illiquidity of Korean equity linked warrants (ELWs) using ILLIQ liquidity measure. The findings are threefold. First, I report convincing evidence of commonality based on the methodologies of Chordia et al (2000) and Cao et al (2011). The commonality remains strong even after controlling for the underlying stock market’s liquidity and other liquidity determinants such as volatility. Second, I investigate the relationship between the illiquidity of ELW markets and the serial correlation of daily ELW returns. For a quartile portfolio of ELWs with lowest returns, the first-order daily return autocorrelation tends to decline with liquidity. Third, I estimate the effects of actual and potential rivalry among Liquidity Providers on the illiquidity of Korean ELWs. This result shows that actual competition significantly reduced the illiquidity of warrant.
본 연구에서는 유동성 지표 중 하나인 ILLIQ 지표를 사용하여 ELW 시장의 비유동성에 대해 분석하였다. 결과는 세 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 먼저, 유동성 동행화와 관련된 대표적 연구인 Chordia et al (2000)와 Cao et al (2011)의 방법론을 사용하여 분석한 결과, 주별 자료에 있어 유동성 동행화의 존재를 확인할 수 있었으며, ELW 기초자산 및 기타 유동성에 영향을 줄 수 있는 요인들을 통제한 후에도 유동성 동행화의 존재를 여전히 확인할 수 있었다. 다음으로 ELW 시장의 비유동성과 수익률 사이의 시계열 상관 관계에 대해 분석해 본 결과, 전주 수익률 기준으로 4분위 하여 포트폴리오를 구성하였을 때, 전 주의 수익률이 가장 낮은 ELW로 구성된 포트폴리오에 있어 비유동성이 높아질수록 유의한 양의 초과수익률도 커짐을 보였다. 마지막으로 비유동성에 미치는 실질 및 잠재 경쟁도의 영향력에 대한 분석을 한 결과 실질 경쟁도가 유의미하게 ELW의 비유동성을 낮춤을 밝혔다.
