We examine through the model that investment banks can provide capital to lower credit firms with relationship banking than without it. Relationship banking is appeared to explain the rapid growth of Japanese economy in 1990s. The focus about Japanese economy is mainly focused on commercial banks. However, other financial institutions such as investment banks and underwriters, as some researchers said, has been providing relationship banking. Especially, investment banks have expanded their area of business and it is unavoidable choice to compete with commercial banks. We call relationship banking of investment bank as relationship underwriting. Relationship underwriting could be means to get a rent from competition with commercial banks. Korea capital market is a good example of relationship banking with recent growth of investment banks. We show that in the Korea market is there increasing bond issues relative to loans reflecting fierce competition between commercial and investment banks.
