This dissertation introduces a low noise and wirelessly powered band-aid type bio-potential acquisition sensor which is developed for a wearable wireless body sensor network (W-BSN).
The sensor chip is integrated on a fabric and 2 screen-printed patterns by Ag conductive ink with the dimension of 1.5x1.5 cm2 and 3cm apart are used as the dry acquisition electrodes. The sensor wirelessly harvests power through printed planar inductor (Q=10.2 and L=0.98uH) on the same fabric sensor patch with a frequency of 13.56MHz. It consumes 12uW at a data rate of 120kb/s. A nested chopping technique with an internal power regulation is adopted to increase the performance of the circuit noise (0.3uVrms) and its common mode rejection ratio (CMRR>90dB). An electronically reconfigured gain (46~60dB) and bandwidth (0.5~200Hz) scheme are also implemented for compromise various vital signal characteristics. A 2-step converted 10b successive approximation register A/D digitizes amplified vital signal with an energy consumption of 0.12nJ/b. This sensor chip is fabricated by 0.18um 1P6M CMOS technology with a size of 2.4x2.0mm2. An ECG signal with 10b resolution is successfully recorded by the band-aid type sensor patch attached on the human chest.
