The relations between the hardware and software are studied in the various fields, network externality, de facto standardization, contingent product diffusion model. Recently, the existence of killer applications(killer app.), which is applications to boost the hardware demand, PC, Video console, and so on, is qualitatively accepted to industry experts, but there is rarely quantitative evidences and academic researches about the roles of killer application.
Killer applications might expand hardware’s market potential by attracting new consumer segments to buy a new hardware or speeding up hardware’s diffusion because consumer who want to use killer application, software, must buy hardware in advance. To verify the increase of hardware demand by killer application, I proposed generalized bass model which reflects the fluctuation of hardware adoption by the killer applications’ launching and the new model considering the growth of hardware market potential in the video game industry. As a result, two models show that killer applications which develop new consumer segment could increase hardware demands by software’s attractiveness or introducing new genres
