The implementation of multi-band/multi-mode is very important issue for the next generation wireless communication. Lately, many kinds of wireless communication such as GSM, EDGE, WCDMA, WLAN and WiMAX are included by one device. So that the PAs for smart mobile phones have become a very challenging area because the PA should handle voice, data, and broadcast with global roaming capability. Therefore, the PAs should have a multi-mode/multi-band capability with good linearity and high efficiency. The efficiency enhancement techniques while maintaining the linearity are EER (Envelope Elimination and Restoration), ET(Envelope Tracking), H-EER(Hybrid- Envelope Elimination and Restoration) and so on.
This thesis research the hybrid-EER based the hybrid envelope amplifier and the power amplifier for wireless communication system. First, the hybrid envelope amplifiers are implemented by using discrete components and CMOS process. The measurements of the hybrid envelope amplifier demonstrate multi-mode capability with high efficiency. Also, we present the proposed level sensing hybrid envelope amplifier. Fabricated in a 0.35-um CMOS process, the proposed envelope amplifier improved the efficiency due to reducing the switch loss. The proposed envelope amplifier simulates 4% efficiency improvement over the conventional hybrid envelope amplifier.
Second, power amplifier is a fully integrated compact Wideband Code Division Multiple Access(W-CDMA) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access(WiMAX) dual-band power amplifier for the hybrid-EER transmitter, which has been demonstrated in 0.18-μm RF CMOS process. The proposed power amplifier is designed to satisfy the dual-band specification and reduce the chip size efficiently to share an input balun, drive amplifiers, and common-source transistor of cascode power stages. The saturated output power was 27.28dBm and 27.3dBm with DE of 30.62% and 31.54% at 1.9GHz and 2.6GHz, respectively.
Third, the hybrid EER transmitter has been evaluated with a single-carrier EDGE, WCDMA and WiMAX signal using combination of the hybrid envelope amplifier and the dual-band power amplifier. The hybrid envelope amplifier provides multi-mode operation and the PA provides dual-band operation. Therefore, dual-band/ multi-mode of the hybrid-EER transmitters are demonstrated.
