Over the past decade, much effort has been devoted to the conjugated polymers with semi-conducting properties due to their applicability in the field of optic and opto-electric devices such as light-emitting diodes, photovoltaic devices, transistors and lasers. In particular, the LEDs based on conjugated polymers have attracted much attention because of their good processability, low operating voltage, fast response times, and facile color tunability over the full visible range which well suitable for flat-panel displays. Organic and polymer light-emitting diodes(OLEDs/PLEDs) that emit white light are attracting increasing interest for their potential applications as full color displays, backlights for liquid-crystal displays, and even next-generation paper-thin light source. Various strategies have been utilized to fabricate polymeric white-light-emitting diodes. The firstly proposed method was multilayer structure device, but nowadays single layer structure is preferred due to its low production cost and easy processability. Single emissive layers of phosphorescent dye-doped polymers can be tailored, through suitable control of the doping level, to generate a composed white emission. Because they can harvest both singlet and triplet excitons, electroluminescent devices based on phosphorescent dyes often exhibit higher quantum efficiencies than those based on fluorescent dyes. In this case, the energy transfer from host such as blue light-emitting polymer to dyes is very important to emit balanced white light. But the capability of host as host is weak according to circumstances due to phosphorescence quenching. In this case, triplet energy level of host is lower than that of dye, so inefficient energy transfer from host to dye occurs.
In chapter 2, we suggested a new solution for this problem. In order to improve the device performance, we fabricated WPLEDs introducing molecular host with a wide band gap and a large electron affinity. By employing molecular host in emissive layer, we could obtain improved device performance through enhanced energy transfer, lower electron injection barrier. Also, we could acquire improved overall compatibility leaded to stable system in electroluminescence (EL). The energy transfer observed from molecular host to green and red dyes and we found that charge trapping was involved for green and red emission in electroluminescence (EL).
