Molecular dynamics simulations of the indium arsenide nanotubes show that the nanotubes with a proper engineering of a hole position can reduce the thermal conductivity of the nanowires by up to 53% (with a 17% reduction in the nanowire cross section). This significant heat flow reduction is a result of the large local heat flux of the interior atoms being removed and the asymmetry of the nanotube with the introduction and displacement of a hole, as well as the usual increased surface area to volume ratio for nanotubes. In particular, we find that the tuning of nanotube geometry, while maintaining the total surface area to volume ratio fixed, can lower the thermal conductivity by as much as 30%, a point that was neglected in previous studies. We expect that this mechanism of heat transport in InAs nanotubes can be applied to other thermoelectric materials such as silicon nanowires and nanotubes to reduce a lattice thermal conductivity even further.
