The deformation due to welding precludes improvement of productivity and quality. Welding distortion should be much more seriously considered in the case of thin plates found in ship and offshore structures. In this study, thin plate welding process using the permanent backing steel is analyzed and optimized. Welding distortion analysis is performed using the equivalent loading method based on the inherent strain method. The optimum value is selected by analyzing interaction of degree of restraints and backing plate variables. Welding experiments were conducted to validate the results.
