Fairy tales can help language and emotional development of young children. However, since young children who have insufficient comprehension may not fully understand the story and meaning in a fairy tale, summary of a fairy tale can help young children to understand the fairy tale. Moreover, summarization of fairy tales can be applied to other applications such as automatic generation of illustrations in fairy tales and text animation.
Automatic summarization of a given text has received an increased interest in the language technology community, but most work in automatic summarization has traditionally focused on news or scientific papers. Since these genres tend to have a rigid structure, automatic summarization systems extract the sentences from the source documents based on important features such as headline, sentence location, and characteristics of well-defined structure (introduction, related work, conclusion, etc.). However, since the structure and description of fairy tales are different from news or scientific papers, applying the traditional method to fairy tale summarization may not generate good summaries.
In this thesis, we propose an automatic method for summarizing fairy tales in Korean. We generate a summary by extracting sentences from the original text, in particular by considering how to select sentences for summarization. We first detect main characters and use linguistic clues that can be used for selecting sentences: temporal adverbs, conjunctive adverbs, emotional cue words, adverbial ending, and so on. We score each sentence based on clues and finally generate the summary of a fairy tale.
We evaluate four systems: two na??ve summarizing systems, a frequency-based system, and a rule-based system. The experimental results show that the rule-based system gives the best performance and our system’s result does not significantly hinder the understanding of original text.
동화는 유아들이 만나는 최초의 문학으로 유아들의 언어 및 정서 발달에 도움을 준다. 그러나 이해력이 부족한 유아들은 동화를 직접 읽고 줄거리와 동화의 의미를 온전히 이해하기에는 어려움이 있기 때문에 동화 원본의 이해를 저해하지 않는 요약은 유아들이 동화를 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있으며, 다른 연구에도 응용될 수 있다.
자동 문서 요약은 자연언어처리 분야에서 많이 연구되어 왔지만 문서의 대상은 주로 정형화 된 구조의 뉴스와 논문이었다. 예를 들면, 자동 뉴스 요약에서는 헤드라인이나 두괄식 구조와 같은 특징을 활용하여 요약을 시도하고 있다. 하지만 동화는 그 구조가 다양하며 주제가 명시적으로 드러나는 문장이 없기 때문에 기존의 방법을 활용하는 것은 어렵다.
본 연구에서는 한국어 동화를 자동 요약하는 방법을 제시한다. 요약문은 동화 원본의 문장들 중 일부를 그대로 발췌하여 구성하며, 요약문에 포함될 문장을 선택하기 위해 단어의 품사와 의미를 단서(시간부사, 접속부사, 감정 유발 단어 등)로 삼아 문장을 분석하는 방법을 제안한다. 제안한 방법을 바탕으로 구현된 시스템을 평가하여 규칙 기반 시스템의 성능이 높음을 보이고 동화의 이해를 크게 저하하지 않음을 보인다.
